On this day in 2005, the Walt Disney Company made a donation of Disneyland’s opening day items to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in celebration of the park’s 50th anniversary. Among the objects were a purple Dumbo ride vehicle and a turquoise tea cup from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Both were selected because they encapsulated the spirit of Disneyland. Then-CEO Michael Eisner signed the gifts over in a ceremony at the Smithsonian. [20 years ago in 2025]
