Shanghai Disney Resort Works Toward Healthier Planet for Earth Month and Beyond!

April is Earth Month. Starting on April 1, 2025, Shanghai Disney Resort will be celebrating with Disney Earth Month. It will encourage guests, cast members, and community members to connect with nature and protect the Earth that we all live on and share. Below is a look at what Shanghai Disney Resort shared about its conservation efforts for Earth Month.

Shanghai, March 27, 2025 – On April 1, Disney Earth Month will begin at Shanghai Disney Resort where guests, cast and those in the community will be invited to immerse themselves in nature, enjoying a vibrant spring, while being encouraged to take action to protect the beautiful Earth we all share. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) and the 10th anniversary of the bird-monitoring program at Wishing Star Park, Earth Month this year will offer a wider variety of engaging and interactive activities to inspire love and action for our planet.

“At Shanghai Disney Resort, the magic of nature and Disney storytelling are deeply connected, inspiring us to protect and preserve the world around us,” said Andrew Bolstein, President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort. “Our commitment to environmental stewardship extends year-round, and we hope that this Earth Month’s celebrations will bring together our guests, cast members, and community in a shared commitment to protecting our planet for generations to come.”

“ourHOME” Nature Conservation Forum inspires sustainability and environmental stewardship
As a highlight of this year’s Earth Month, the “ourHOME” Nature Conservation Forum will be hosted at Shanghai Disney Resort on Earth Day, April 22. In collaboration with National Geographic, this year’s forum aims to inspire sustainability efforts and showcase global efforts to protect, restore and celebrate the natural world by bringing together National Geographic Explorers, renowned experts and enthusiasts from different sectors, nonprofit organizations, volunteers, students and cast members for insightful keynotes and engaging panel discussions.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF). Since its launch, DCF has supported nonprofit organizations globally to achieve remarkable milestones in helping protect more than 1,000 species of wildlife and natural habitats across half the countries and regions around the world and all five oceans. These efforts include sponsoring and supporting the International Crane Foundation (ICF) and its collaborators to conserve Siberian Cranes along their flyway in the nearly past 10 years, which has nearly doubled the population of Siberian cranes in the eastern flyway region. In celebration of the collaboration over the years, representatives from the ICF will also join other environmental experts at the forum, inspiring the audience with insights and best practices in nature conservation.

The first Youth Environmental Inspiration Program, a joint effort between Shanghai Disney Resort and Shanghai Science and Education Development Foundation, encourages students to identify environmental issues and their causes in daily life and propose solutions through a competition. The top three celebrated teams will be awarded at the forum. This initiative has helped further cultivate environmental mindsets and push ideas into action among youth, empowering the next generation to make positive changes for our planet.

Fun engaging activities invite everyone to participate in and practice conservation
A celebration of Earth Month would not be complete without the participation of all resort guests and cast members. From April 18 to 22, “Celebrate Earth Month Fair” will return to the lakeshore lawn at Disneytown. The Fair this year will present a holistic overview of the resort’s nature conservation commitment through a series of themed booths and interactive activities from waste sorting, water saving to exploring nature. National Geographic will return with its iconic yellow border, along with a series of engaging activities. Through collaboration with various local nonprofit organizations, the resort encourages everyone to participate and enhance their knowledge about environmental protection and wildlife conservation.

In addition, as part of the “Environmental Steward Program” at Shanghai Disney Resort, guests who demonstrate Earth-conscious behaviors during their park visit will have a chance to receive a limited-edition themed sticker from cast members, which is also a part of our efforts to recognize individuals who inspire positive environmental change.

Disney VoluntEARS at the resort continue to take positive actions. In mid-April, more than 100 Disney VoluntEARS and their families will head out to Shanghai Binjiang Forest Park, where the estuary of the Yangtze River is located, to collect trash and waste, raising awareness around plastic pollution and marine litter as pressing environmental issues and promoting conservation efforts through hands-on clean-up activities.

Nature conservation lies in every small action in the resort’s daily operations
Earth Month is just one reflection of the ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship at Shanghai Disney Resort, encapsulated in “Disney Planet Possible” — meaningful actions we are taking for a healthier planet for people and wildlife. The resort’s commitment to carbon reduction, sustainability, and wildlife conservation extends beyond the month-long celebration and has become an integral part of its daily operations. Some of the resort’s recent achievements include:

  • The resort’s Wishing Star Park boasts lush greenery and a diverse ecological system. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the bird-watching program at the beautiful wetland park. With the joint efforts from Shanghai Disney Resort, Shanghai Wild Bird Society and the Disney Conservation team, 129 different bird species have been monitored on-site as of today.
  • As of mid-March 2025, the resort installed 3,921 solar panels on the roofs or walls of 24 buildings in the backstage area, generating a total of 2.69 million kilowatt hours of electricity and reducing carbon emissions by 1127.4 tons.
  • In January 2025, the resort upgraded its existing 40 hybrid shuttle buses to pure electric buses, with an estimated annual carbon reduction of about 1,000 tons. The application of electrification has been expanded to more areas including backstage transportation services, gardening tools, etc. to reduce carbon emissions from multiple touchpoints.
  • The resort uses treated lake water from a comprehensive water treatment plant for irrigation, ground cleaning, toilet flushing, and landscape hydration. At present, about 40% of the resort’s municipal water usage is replaced by treated water from the Wishing Star Lake. From the Grand Opening in 2016 to the end of 2024, Shanghai Disney Resort has cumulatively utilized over 9.91 million cubic meters of Wishing Star Lake water, saving the equivalent of 4,000 Olympic-size swimming pools worth of municipal water.
  • Based on Disney’s signature storytelling and relentless creativity, the resort has innovatively infused the idea of sustainability into its entertainment experiences, including the magical recycling bin “Xiaotui” and the fun interactive show “JAMMITORS,” which uses tools such as plastic trash cans, brushes, and brooms as “musical instruments” to convey the concept of waste sorting and recycling through rhythm.

Disney is putting possibility into practice by doing our part to conserve resources, care for wildlife and their habitats, and share stories that inspire action. This April, Shanghai Disney Resort invites everyone to get inspired and take small actions to protect the Earth we share. Every simple action can help create a healthier, happier planet.
