‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Wins First Weekend Box Office of 2025

Mufasa: The Lion King has started 2025 off with a win at the box office. The film brought in $23.8 million at the North American box office over the weekend. This is the third weekend that the film has been in theaters. It didn’t win the first weekend but since then has gathered strength as it has competed against Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic 3 brought in $21.2 million this weekend.

Domestically, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is still ahead of Mufasa: The Lion King cumulatively. It currently has brought in $187.5 million to date. Mufasa: The Lion King has brought in $169.2 million domestically to date.  

Nosferatu came in third place this weekend with $13.2 million. This was followed by Moana 2 with $12.4 million. To date, the sequel has now earned $960.5 million globally. The top five was rounded out by Wicked which earned $10.2 million.

This year is starting off stronger at the box office than last year. At this point, the first-weekend box office earnings were up 20% over last year.

Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, “Mufasa: The Lion King” enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
