For Disney or animation historians, the Ink & Paint department is a legendary and well-known part of the ongoing legacy of The Walt Disney Company and animated movie making. For many people, however, ink & paint is an unknown medium that they may have seen for most of their lives in animated classics. During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the Ink & Paint department gave a demonstration of how this process created movies. This is through the process of using the traditional methods of cel inking and painting.
Cel inking and painting is a process that looks incredibly difficult but also has beautiful outcomes. When considering there are 24 frames per second, this department was responsible for creating movies that were over an hour long comprised of thousands of ink & paint cels that were each hand painted. In the following demonstration, learn how this process works while also seeing it demonstrated.
Today, Disney’s Ink & Paint department focuses on making exclusive artwork using these traditional techniques. They no longer make animated features as technology and innovation have paved the way for new ways of animated storytelling.
