Deadpool & Wolverine has arrived in theaters and right from the get go, the film has been breaking records! The film had a very strong opening weekend and brought in $438.3 million globally, including $205 million domestically. These numbers make Deadpool & Wolverine the highest-grossing global opening for an R-rated film in box office history.
That isn’t the only record it has, however. The film, which stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, had the 8th highest-grossing opening of all time. This has it passing up 2019’s The Lion King. It is also the biggest opening since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. It also is the second largest opening for a third-installment. The only one that had a stronger opener as a third-installment was 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
The success of this film is also another success for The Walt Disney Company. It has released the No. 1 title for May, June, and July now with The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Inside Out 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine respectively.
Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Shawn Levy who shared how it has both the humor and action that fans expect but also has a warmth to tie everything together. “I know people are expecting the funny; they’re going to get it. They’re expecting the action; they’re going to get it,” Levy — who is also a writer and producer on the film — said. “But the movie has a warmth as a result of the story we tell between these two guys where this unlikely friendship is built. That’s the piece I think people aren’t expecting.”
Kevin Feige also shared about the success of this film. In short, it all comes down to making great movies. “Nothing strengthens the Marvel Cinematic Universe or perhaps any cinematic universe like a great movie,” he said. “A great movie is the answer to many cinematic universe issues, and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and our director, Shawn Levy, have made a great movie.”
This comes as the Marvel Cinematic Universe collectively has made over $30 billion at the box office. With this accomplishment, each of the 33 feature films have opened No. 1 at the weekend box office domestically. Deadpool & Wolverine looks like it will be number 34. 10 of the MCU films have grossed over $1 billion globally, while two films have grossed over $2 billion. Marvel also currently holds the No. 2, No. 6, No. 7, and No. 10 spots on the list of highest-grossing films of all time worldwide.
On top of all of the excitement in the box office, both of the title characters are now currently delighting guests at Disney California Adventure in Avengers Campus. Deadpool is also making appearances at Disneyland Paris as well. These are limited time offerings that are proving to be quite popular with guests.
