As temperatures climb, you make be looking for things to do inside. Those inside activities don’t need to be devoid of summer vibes though! Fortunately, Disney+ has a plethora of movies, documentaries, and shorts that are perfect for summer viewing! I’ve put together a few suggestions to get you started!
Luca – Two young boys experience an unforgettable Italian summer filled with gelato, pasta, and endless scooter rides. But all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface. Luca is an absolutely sweet movie with a great message. This one deserves a top spot on your summer must-watch list.
Finding Nemo – Nemo, an adventurous young clownfish, is unexpectedly taken from his Great Barrier Reef home to a dentist’s office aquarium. It’s up to his worrisome father Marlin and a friendly but forgetful fish Dory to bring Nemo home – meeting vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls, and more along the way. Finding Nemo is a modern classic. It has a lot of heart but isn’t so heavy that it leaves you wrecked for the day. It also has a sequel, Finding Dory, which means you can spend even more time with the characters.
A Goofy Movie – Though Goofy always means well, his amiable cluelessness and klutzy pratfalls regularly embarrass his awkward adolescent son, Max. When Max’s lighthearted prank on his high-school principal finally gets his longtime crush, Roxanne, to notice him, he asks her on a date. Max’s trouble at school convinces Goofy that he and the boy need to bond over a cross-country fishing trip like the one he took with his dad when he was Max’s age, which throws a kink in his son’s plans to impress Roxanne. If you aren’t watching A Goofy Movie and singing Stand Out or I2I are you even living this summer?
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl – Jack Sparrow, a freewheeling 18th-century pirate, quarrels with a rival pirate bent on pillaging Port Royal. When the governor’s daughter is kidnapped, Sparrow decides to help the girl’s love save her. If you are missing the parks this summer, the entire Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is for you. Personally, my favorites are the first one and the fourth one.
The Wonderful Summer of Mickey Mouse – Mickey Mouse and his friends each recall the wild events leading up to the Annual Summer Fireworks Spectacular from their point of view. Admittedly, The Wonderful Summer of Mickey Mouse is not the strongest entry in the seasonal Mickey Mouse movies but it is still a ton of fun and great for adults and kids alike.
If these aren’t enough to keep you busy (and we don’t blame you! It’s hot out there!), I have a Letterboxd list of all of the summery offerings on Disney+. All of the entries in the list should be fairly family-friendly as well, making it easier to plan a family movie night! What other types of lists would you like to see? Let me know in the comments below! Stay cool out there!
