The next Star Trek movie will not be the fourth installment of the Star Trek movies in the Kelvin universe with the Enterprise under the command of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk. Instead, it will be an origin story and it will be released in 2025. Paramount announced the film at CinemaCon. It is being written by Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and directed by Toby Haynes (Star Wars: Andor).
The film is set to be a new origin story in the Star Trek universe, or one of them. It is officially known as the Untitled Star Trek Origin Story currently. While it is not focused on the Chris Pine crew of the Enterprise, J.J. Abrams is set to produce it. The film will take place decades before Star Trek (2009). At this point, it isn’t known who the focus of this film will be on as little to no details were released.
The last Star Trek film to be released in theater was 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. This new film will take place well before then. It isn’t known if this will be before or after Star Trek: Enterprise in the mid-22nd century or if it will be at another point in the Star Trek universe’s history. If it is set after the events of Star Trek: Enterprise, it could be an origin story for both the prime and Kelvin universe’s storylines. It also isn’t known if this will be all new characters or familiar ones.
This new film may not be focused on the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk but that film is still being worked on. Currently, Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) is taking a stab at the script for this film. If the film can be figured out, most of the crew of the Kelvin Universe’s Enterprise have expressed eagerness to return to the franchise.
In the Paramount+ realm, there is also a movie focused on Section 31 in the works for the streaming service. The film will be focused on Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou. This is a role she originated in Star Trek: Discovery. The Section 31 film is supposedly taking place during the lost era of Star Trek before the Star Trek: The Next Generation. There are also talks about a movie that is a sequel to Star Trek: Picard, according to Patrick Stewart. While it isn’t known if this is green lit at this point, it does seem indicative of a trend that Star Trek movies are once again on their way back to big and small screens.
