It has been 8 years since the last Star Trek film hit the big screen. More and more, fans are wondering what is going on with the next one as the gap widens. However, there would seem to be a plan. At least, if Roddenberry Chief Operating Officer Trevor Roth is correct. Roddenberry Entertainment exists to ensure that Star Trek projects align with creator Gene Roddenberry’s vision. Trevor Roth and CEO Rod Roddenberry are executive producers on Paramount+’s Star Trek series and Roddenberry Entertainment produces podcasts and other content.
At SWSX, Roth chatted with Screen Rant about Star Trek, including the future of the movies, he assured fans that “There is a plan” for the Star Trek movie franchise. He also indicated that there will be a new Star Trek film “in the near future.” During the interview, Roth said:
I am not able to say much, but I can say that it is Paramount’s intent to figure out the Star Trek side of movies and what’s going on there. There’s every intent of a new movie coming out in the very near future. There’s a lot of secrecy around what’s going to happen there. But there is a plan getting into place. And we’re very excited to see it return to the big screen.
He also shared about some of the challenges with bringing a new idea to the big screen:
And I will tell you that you want to do it the right way. And yet, practical things get in [the way]. People a lot of times are like, ‘Oh, why isn’t this happening or that happening?’ And sometimes those questions are really good questions. And other times, there’s a lot you don’t know that is happening behind the scenes that can make things more difficult than you would think. So all in all, we’re getting there to my understanding, and we’re excited, and plans are being put in place. And I know that from the standpoint of the studio, there is no lack of recognition of wanting and needing a Star Trek film coming out.
The last Star Trek film that was released was 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. It was directed by Justin Lin. This was the third film to follow Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise in the Kelvin Universe. This universe was created by J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek in 2009.
