Welcome to Wrexham received 5 Emmys at the 75th Creative Arts Emmy Awards over the weekend. The awards were given to the first season of the series which is currently streaming on Hulu. Produced by FX, Welcome to Wrexham is a docuseries that chronicles what happens when Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchase a struggling football (soccer) club, the Red Dragons, in Wales. The first season, which received the awards, looks at the history of the club and shows the start of a new era as Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchase the club and then attempt to turn it around.
For the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Welcome to Wrexham was nominated for six awards. In the end, it won five of these. These are the awards that the series received:
- Outstanding Picture Editing For An Unstructured Reality Program
- Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program
- Outstanding Directing For A Reality Program
- Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Reality Program (Single or Multi-Camera)
- Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program
The five Emmy Awards meant that Welcome to Wrexham was the second most awarded show at the event. Only The Last of Us beat it out with eight awards.
In response to the wins, Ryan Reynolds posted a video on X/Twitter that included Rob McElhenney to say thanks. “Wow, an Emmy, what an incredible honour,” McElhenney says at the start. “There’s so many people to thank. I’ve been waiting for this moment for 16 years so I’ve got a lot to say. I’d like to start by thanking…” Only to be interrupted by Deadpool who says, “First and foremost, Wrexham, we love you,” he said. “Thank you for letting Rob and the other guy tell your story.” Along with showing gratitude for the Emmy, Deadpool has some rather humorous quips as well. They do include some language that wouldn’t be heard on network television during primetime. The full video can be seen here:
