Director of New Star Wars Film Shares Opinion on Future of Star Wars

A new Star Wars film is on the way that continues the story of Rey. This new film will also have a woman directing it, a first for a movie in the franchise. Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. She also is the first person of color to direct a Star Wars film as well. In a recent interview with CNN, she shared about her opinions on the future of Star Wars with a woman helping lead.

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special,” Obaid-Chinoy recently told CNN. “We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”

While there have been female directors for some of the Star Wars series that have appeared on Disney+, Obaid-Chinoy is the first to direct a full-length feature. This comes after Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron movie was shelved. It should be noted that Lucasfilm, which oversees the Star Wars franchise, is led by Kathleen Kennedy. In this capacity, Kennedy oversees all of the Star Wars stories. However, Obaid-Chinoy will be the first to shape an individual story and make it into a movie.

There isn’t a lot known about this new Rey Skywalker movie. What is known is that it takes place about 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It is also known that Daisy Ridley will be returning to portray Rey. At Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy announced the movie saying, “Well we’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray,” she confirmed. “There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that’s where we’re going.”

Kennedy was also asked if Luke Skywalker will be making any appearances in the film as Force Ghost. To this, she replied, “I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or [on] Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly, the spirit of what he represents to her is going to be significant.”

Ridley has also voiced her anticipation for the film in an interview with Collider. “I’m very excited,” she said. “The story is really cool … It’s not what I expected, but I’m very excited.”
