On Christmas Day, Star Trek: Prodigy arrived on Netflix. This came after the series was dropped earlier this year by Paramount+. It comes ahead of its second season arriving on Netflix in 2024. Just days after arriving on Netflix, this animated Star Trek series is already making strides with its new audience. This series was aimed at opening up Star Trek to a younger audience, and judging by a Netflix Top 10 list, it is doing that.
By December 26th, Star Trek: Prodigy had entered the Top 10 Kids list on Netflix at the #9 slot. The following day saw the series bumping up to #6. This makes it one of two series that were recently added to Netflix to get the distinction of entering this Netflix Top 10 list. It also is doing quite well overseas as well. It entered the Top 10 lists in UK, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and New Zealand, FlixPatrol reports. In New Zealand it hopped right up to #4. Part of this could be because the series has never been shown there before.
Netflix is showing Star Trek: Prodigy globally except for in Canada and some European countries. In Canada Prodigy is being shown on CTV and in some European countries it is on SkyShowtime. These countries include Albania, Andorra, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia & Sweden. The rest of the world now can see Prodigy on the largest streaming service in the world.
With Star Trek: Prodigy now being on Netflix, there are new possibilities opened up for Star Trek and the series itself. It could do exactly what it was hoped that this series would do initially, reach new and younger audiences with Star Trek. This could lead to even more interest in Star Trek and potentially even lead to more fans for the other Star Trek series that are currently found on Paramount+. This presumes that these series continue to remain on Paramount+ for the foreseeable future. There are a lot of question marks about the future of Paramount and its streaming service Paramount+. This could be the beginning a new streaming model for Star Trek to build a bigger fan base. Only time will tell.
The second season of Star Trek: Prodigy will be arriving sometime in 2024 on Netflix with 20 episodes. When and how this season will be released isn’t known. Paramount+ has been known to split animated seasons release schedule up and release half at a time. Paramount+ would also release episodes on a weekly basis. Netflix may not do the same. It also isn’t known if there will be more seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy to be released in the future. There are ideas for 7 seasons currently the show creators have revealed. There are also other new Star Trek series and movies that will be making their way to Paramount+ and also potentially movie theaters.
