Imagineers Discuss Future of Walking Droids with Bob Iger and Josh D’Amaro After Disneyland Playtest

Recently, three walking droids that resembled BD-1 made an appearance at Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for a playtest. These droids captivated those visiting in person and also the internet as photos and videos made their way online. Following this playtest, Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh D’Amaro, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman, stopped by Walt Disney Imagineering to discuss the playtest. They also were given updates about what the next steps would be with these robots by Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Imagineering, and a team of Imagineers.

Both Walt Disney Imagineering and Josh D’Amaro posted on Instagram about the meeting. Imagineering said, “We’re so excited about the variety of ways our Imagineers are bringing new and innovative characters to life using sophisticated technology hidden in little droids like these!” Here are both of the instagram posts:

Bob and I had a great time visiting Bruce Vaughn and our Imagineers today. We had the chance to spend time with the team and get an update about their new robotic character prototype which made a brief appearance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge last week.

Below is a look at the arrival of the BD-1 looking droids in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge last week. It seemed that they only appeared at Disneyland for one day. It is unknown at this time if there are any plans for these particular droids to make a return to the land.

These aren’t the only droids that have made their way to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, however. Day guests have been known to see R2-D2 and also Chopper in the land. For special events, C-3P0 has also stopped by and said hello with guests. There have also been new characters in the land that have come from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka. What do you think about the addition of more droids in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge? What would you like to see in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge moving forward?
