On June 29, 2023, members of the media were invited to the Hyperion to experience the world premiere of Rogers: The Musical. Following this performance, several of the creators of Rogers: The Musical sat down to talk about how they created it during a special Q&A panel.
The panel was made up of the following (Left to Right):
- Hunter Bell, Book Writer
- Christopher Lennertz, Composer, Conductor and Arranger
- Sarah Kobayashi, Choreographer at Disney Live Entertainment
- Dan Fields, Executive Creative Director at Disney Live Entertainment
- Dave Bushore, Vice President – Franchise Creative and Marketing at Marvel Studios
Throughout the course of the panel, after a brief interruption, the team talked about how this new show came together. This included the origin story of this musical when Dan Fields and Dan Bushmore saw the scene in Hawkeye on Disney+ and just knew that it needed to become a real theatrical production.
Fields shared, “Hey! We’re Disney Live Entertainment! We can do that! So, that’s really what we set out to do and with this amazing team of collaborators and many collaborators who are behind the scenes in the park.”
This set the process in motion for creating what would become Rogers: The Musical. Part of that process was creating a story about Steve Rogers and how he became Captain America. The team realized that they really wanted to focus in on the romance with Peggy Carter as well.
“Great love stories make great musicals,” said book writer Hunter Bell, who starred and wrote the Tony Award-nominated [title of show]. “So much great musical theater is based on a love story. So when we honed in on Cap having all these adventures in the films, there’a a compass and there’s Peggy. We honed in on that love story of Cap and Peggy.”
What came out really is a great musical. It isn’t overly long so the whole family can enjoy it. It is full of heart, humor, and love. Watch the full panel of the creatives talking about creating Rogers: The Musical here:
