On Thursday, June 29, 2023, members of the media and other invited special guests were allowed to see the world premiere of Rogers: The Musical at the Hyperion Theater in Disney California Adventure. This show was built off of a scene in the Disney+ series Hawkeye where the song Save the City became an instant hit. For many going into the show, myself included, the question was: can one awesome song be turned into a full half-hour show? The short answer? It absolutely can be and Rogers: The Musical does just that.
The Story
Rogers: The Musical tells the story of Steve Rogers’ journey as Captain America, including, of course, his time with Nick Fury and the Avengers. The most important part of this story though is the love story between Steve and Peggy Carter. The story overall works surprisingly well and fits a LOT of the highlights of the life of Steve Rogers into about 30 minutes. This is definitely a story that is easier to follow if there is some familiarity with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, if going in without knowing anything, it will still be enjoyable!
The Music
The music in Rogers: The Musical was very enjoyable. Yes, there were songs like Save the City and Star Spangled Man that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will already know and love. There are also several new songs that were written specifically for this show. They were very enjoyable. At times they were fun, funny, beautiful, and even poignant. It was surprising the range of emotion that was crammed into the music for a show that really isn’t that long. Overall, the music really was solid, and a topic of discussion after the show was many people hoping that a soundtrack would be released for it (on vinyl too please!?).
The Characters
The characters in Rogers: The Musical that really carry the show are Steve Rogers and also Peggy Carter. They are joined by Bucky, Doctor Erskine, the Avengers, and of Nick Fury. All of them did a fantastic job. There are two versions of Steve Rogers and both were incredible. Peggy also has a lovely role and fits in perfectly with the show. And then there is Nick Fury… who SINGS. This was a highlight of the show and quite hilarious. Really, there were no low lights. The show really focuses on Steve Rogers and Peggy but all of the people around them add something to whatever is going on. Even the people that didn’t necessarily have character names were interesting to watch.
Final Thoughts
In Rogers: The Musical, Steve Rogers sings “I can do this all day.” This is a show that is worth seeing more than just one day this summer. In fact, after seeing the show, fans will be left thinking that they hope that Steve Rogers won’t be just doing this all day or all summer, but well beyond. This is a show that has heart, humor, and a healthy dose of awesome from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is a wonderful addition to Disney California Adventure and fits in perfectly with Avengers Campus. This is the show that should not be missed this summer! Get over to Disney California Adventure and see Captain America sell some war bonds, be joined by the Avengers to save the city, and of course, have some singing and dancing along the way. I take my hat off to this show. I loved it and I hope you do too!
