Disney’s Live-Action “Bambi” Might Have Found a Director

Disney is continuing its trend of rebooting animated classics as live-action films. There have been several animated musical that have gotten the live-action treatment, but now Disney is pivoting and trying something a little bit different. Disney is looking to developing the animated film Bambi as a live-action film. Much like The Lion King live-action film, this movie will utilize CGI to create photorealistic animals in the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the upcoming live-action Bambi might have found its director. Disney is in talks with Sarah Polley to direct the film. Polley has earned an Oscar for her best-adapted screenplay for Women Talking.

This iteration of Bambi was first announced in 2020. At the time Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking)  were set to write the screenplay. Depth of Field, the production banner run by Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano, was set to produce the film. Depth of Field also worked with Robert Zemeckis on Pinocchio recently. It is unknown if the same team is working on the screenplay and producing this film at this time.

Bambi was originally released in 1942 and tells the story of a young fawn in the forest who grows up in the forest. He grows up in the forest with his two best friend Thumper, a bunny, and Flower, a skunk. This movie is an animated classic and recognize as a treasure that was created by Walt Disney fairly early on in his movie-making career.

Polley has quite the career in Hollywood. Born in Canada, she started her career as a child actress before transitioning to behind the camera. She first appeared in front of the camera when she was four years old, which was released in 1985. She directed her first short in 1999 and her feature film directorial debut in 2006.

At this time, a timeline or release destination for the live-action Bambi is not known. Daps Magic will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
