‘Toy Story 5’ To Be a “Surprising” Sequel Pixar Chief Teases

Recently during an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that a fifth Toy Story film was coming from Pixar. This led to much fan discussion and speculation and Tim Allen hopped on Twitter to say “See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond!”

In a recent interview with The Wrap, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter shared that the next Toy Story movie may. not be what people are expecting.

“The thing we’ve been really trying to do, and this has been the case for a while, is we’ve been looking at them a little bit like, okay, we’re not planning for the future. When we made the first Toy Story, we had no idea there would be a Toy Story 2,” Docter said of the first full-length computer-animated film that earned nearly $375 million, the second-best box office of ’95. “We’re just trying to make this movie. But that in making the movie, it takes you places, unexpected places, which is what I love about the creative process. If I knew exactly what I was doing when I started making a movie, there’d kind of be no point in making it. I discover so much along the way.”

Toy Story 4 was not made with a sequel in mind, Docter said. He continued by saying, “I think it’ll be surprising. It’s got some really cool stuff that you haven’t seen before.”

At this point, there isn’t an announced release date for Toy Story 5. At this point, Pixar has release dates for Elemental (June 16th) and Elio (March 1st, 2024) announced. There are unannounced projects being released on June 13th, 2025; March 6th, 2026; and June 19th, 2026.

Judging by Tim Allen’s aforementioned tweet, it seems like Woody and Buzz might be coming back to the franchise. However, Pixar has not officially confirmed this at this point.
