Here Are The Star Trek Series Coming to Paramount+ in 2023

It is a very good time to be a Star Trek fan. At just about any given time there is new Star Trek being released on Paramount+. Not since the days when there was Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager all releasing content in what was then a relatively short amount of time, has there been so much to geek about in the world of Trek.

In 2022 Star Trek released new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy. This is more content than ever and may someday be looked back on as the second golden age of Star Trek. The discussion about what defines the previous golden age will be saved for another post. As 2023 starts, there will be much more Star Trek coming to Paramount+.

Throughout most of the year, there will be new episodes of one Trek series or another. Below is a look at what is currently known to be coming in 2023:

Star Trek: Picard – Season 3

Premieres: February 16, 2023

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard will have Sir Patrick Stewart once again returning as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. This role he originated in 1987. Now in a much different chapter of life than when he was captain of the Enterprise, Picard is facing some new adventures and challenges from a different seat and perspective. This final season will have Stewart joined by LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

This season will see Admiral Picard pulling his crew back together to face a new villain named Vadic, portrayed by Amanda Plummer. Daniel Davis will also be returning to his role as Moriarty, the sentient hologram based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous literary villain and foil to Sherlock Holmes. LeVar Burton’s daughter, Mica, has been cast as Georgi LaForge’s youngest daughter Alandra. While the main ship of the season will be the U.S.S. Titan, the Enterprise F is also set to make an appearance.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 2

Premieres: 2023

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have Captain Pike back in the center seat of the Enterprise for more adventures in the pre Captain Kirk era Starfleet history. However, James T. Kirk (as played by Paul Wesley) is expected to be showing up in the second season. There is the possibility of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott appearing in the second season after making a brief cameo at the end of the first season.

The second season of Strange New Worlds will also include a couple of characters from Star Trek: Lower Decks. There will be a crossover episode with Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler appearing alongside the crew of the Enterprise in their live-action form. They will be portrayed by Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, who also voice the characters.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 5

Premieres: 2023

Star Trek: Discovery will be returning for a fifth season. The crew of Discovery are now living in a time that is 900 years after the events of The Original Series. This season will be a race as Discovery’s crew and many others all seek an ancient power. This next season is said to have a change in tone that will be more action and adventure.

Previously, Discovery was racing to save the galaxy from an anomaly and help rebuild the Federation. During this, Captain Burnham’s love interest chose the wrong side of the fight and ended up having to serve time because of it. It is unknown how this will play out in the coming season, but it would be no surprise if the next chapter of their relationship is explored.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 4

Premieres: 2023 (expected)

Star Trek: Lower Decks will continue to share the exploits of the crew found in the lower decks of the U.S.S. Cerritos. The season wrapped up with the Cerritos and other California-class ships showing their worth as second contact ships over the automated Texas-class ships. It also showed some growth and changes for members of the crew that could have some pretty significant impact on the future of the show.

Lower Decks takes place not just in the lower decks of the Cerritos, but also in many ways the lower decks of the Starfleet itself as the mission of the Cerritos and other California-class ships aren’t viewed as quite as important as other missions in the fleet. This series, however, has some amazing cameos and guest stars that have brought characters like Captain Riker, Zeframe Cochrane, Leah Brahms, Hikaru Sulu, and many more!

An exact release date isn’t known for this series but the initial announcement said it was expected to be sometime in 2023.

Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 2

Premieres: 2023 (expected)

The crew of the U.S.S. Protostar will be back for a second season and more adventures. It was announced earlier this year that Star Trek: Prodigy had been picked up for a second season that should be arriving in 2023. Where the crew of the Protostar will be going and what will be happening to them remains a big mystery. This series has already included new speed capabilities for a Starfleet ship, time travel, and some other new story devices that provide a lot of possibilities for this crew’s future adventures. The crew itself is different than any other Star Trek show to date, all of them being misfits working under the tutelage of a holographic Admiral Janeway. However, as the first season wraps up, this unique crew has also made an ally in the real Admiral Janeway.

It is unknown when exactly season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy will be arriving on Paramount+ other than sometime in 2023. With the current production schedule, it could also be early 2024.

There are also some Star Trek shows that are in development currently as well. First off is Section 31, Starfleet’s shady spy organization. Michelle Yeoh is set to star in this series whenever it makes its way to the screen. She plays the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, who has been redeemed a bit but still can be challenging and dangerous. A timeline for this series’ arrival has not been announced. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is also in the works. Not a lot is known about this show other than it will have cadets at the Academy. It isn’t even known what era the series will take place. It is possible that since Tilly took a job at the recently reopened Starfleet Academy during Star Trek: Discovery that it could take place in the 31st century. However, that is pure speculation.

There is a lot of Star Trek to be enjoyed currently and to also look forward to. While no movies appear to be on the horizon at the moment, there is plenty to enjoy on Paramount+. This includes all the previous Star Trek series and Short Treks. A couple of the movies from the Kelvin timeline are also on the streamer.

What are you most excited about in the future for Star Trek? Is there a specific series or character you are most looking forward to seeing in 2023? Share your thoughts, opinions, and predictions in the comments below!

Strange New Worlds is definitely the flagship series now, although if course the Picard plotliune should be satisfying and intriguing. Strange New Worlds has the best writing I’ve seen, and the only question I have is why it should take very long to get back since it has already been filmed?

Interest is very high with virtually all the feedback positive and most of us amazed.that every episode was a winner. Not thrilled that there are only 8 episodes in season 1, but if that’s what it takes to get this quality well have to live with it. I just hope they don’t lose some of the great cast because it runs so seldom for much of the year.

    1. There are 10 episodes of SNW in season 1

  2. excited for it all… curious to see the new disco season and new tone as each season seems to be a little different which i like.

picard also changes season to season… i will miss the cast from the first two season but should be fun

lower decks is just amazing and looking forward and hoping for season 5-6 pickup

snw is good not as hooked as the other 3 but another well made show

    prodigy too… geeze so much

  3. It is a terrible idea to make a Section 31 series. They best serve as mysterious ruthless antagonists in other Trek series. A series will make them less mysterious. Also a series would either try to morally justify their actions or make them toothless. Gergiou is a camp villain and Michelle Yeoh has better things to do with her time. Star Trek academy has the problem of what to do for year 2 or 3 etc. It is a limited series idea a best . They need to move forward a new show set past Picard perhaps a fleet based show. Exploring a distant part of the galaxy

  4. Can’t be a second golden age if it’s quantity over quality, remember tng was winding down when DS9 started so only 2 shows were airing at anyone time not 5 or 6 with only 1 or 2 with some quality

What I’m excited about? Nothing. Timelines, sequels, prequels … Who on earth can keep track of it.

I look forward to seeing 7 of 9 interaction with the enterprise d crew and maybe launching her own spin-off. I would also like to see B’elanna Torres interaction with worf if that were possible.

I love anything star trek.strangers from the sky should be used in strange new worlds

All of these series are “Must See” and this is indeed a great era for all trekkers.

  9. And most excited for Star Trek strange new worlds and Star Trek prodigy I look forward to seeing the development of Janeway with the misfits of the protostar I look forward to seeing where strange new worlds story lines are heading including the arrival of Captain Kirk!

Ben waiting patiently for new seasons of Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. Not used to “aging” so much between seasons!

Who can keep up with it? Any fan. It’s not that hard.

7 of 9 needs a spin off. Interacting with the Borg and either plotting their final destruction or forming an alliance with the Federation, allowing access to their transwarp capabilities.

  13. Definitely, Strange new world’s!

  14. Patrick Stewart is a brilliant actor. It will be bitter sweet to have him and the cast of TNG pass the torch. Still as a life long Trek fan, Discovery and Strange New Worlds, are incredibly well written and superbly acted. I brushed them both off, as I did with Deep bore Nine, (sorry for those fans). I finally did binge both shows and Picard, and I am re-hooked. I can’t wait to see the new seasons and hopefully a lot more. These shows are definitely in the spirit of Star Trek (Roddenberry’s son had to give the approval btw) despite what Shatner has to say about them. I think he’s mad he wasn’t asked to be included.

  15. ive heard “its a terrible idea” for
a star trek show set on a space station
a star trek show set before tos
a star trek animated show aimed at adults
a star trek show with picard and not the tng crew
a star trek show not set on the enterprise
    rebooting the movies

no offense maybe you are right but at least some trek fans always think everything is a bad idea… we all feel like we know best and we own the franchise… we dont. well i do but that’s another story lol just kidding… but i would love a risa series. a ds9 followup. a series set on a non federation ship having adventures like okona… i thought we were gonna get that rios but didn’t happen. a starfleet medical ship series. i dont mind section 31… just not an academy show. why people want to see people in space college i have no idea.

  16. i stopped watching Discovery 2 seasons ago. just unwatchable. Picard was painful to watch in season 2, but i will give S3 a try. All other new shows are amazing, and i cant wait for new releases!

  17. Hahahahahahha, you are no Star Trek fan. I was with you when I was a kid as I hated DS9 as Voyager was my favorite (I know I Know). But after watching DS9 when it came to Netflix years ago I loved it. But none of these new shows are Trek. And they are NOT in the spirit of Roddenberry. He thought humans and other species would grow together and get better not turn on each other with curses being every other word with drug use. And Discovery is the Michael show. She’s the king and everything revolves around her. She made Spock who he is, she saved the universe many times. She’s the bestest EVAR! The shows have bombed and Paramount keeps pushing as they can’t cancel their flagship CBS Paramount Plus shows. But it’s your opinion and I respect that even though I disagree 1000%.

  18. You guys actually like these new trek shows? I bought Paramount+ just so I could watch my old favorites (TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT) now that they aren’t on Amazon or Netflix anymore. I tried watching Discovery and Picard and was immediately turned off. THIS IS NOT STAR TREK! It’s even worse than Star Wars. Sadly I have to watch the Parody show the Orville to get my new Star Trek fix but thank Jesus I have all the old shows to remind me how good the old stuff was. The new stuff is just over produced, flashy crap. They curse constantly, nothing fits Canon, characters act nothing like they should and everything is woke to fit today’s Hollywood narrative. I don’t mind a little narrative in my Trek but not when it’s made around it. So I’m really at a loss for words as I don’t know how old Star Trek lovers could like these shows? But that’s just my opinion.

  19. Lest forgetting the revisiting of Star Trek Hidden Frontier. Continuing the adventures of Excelsior, Rishi Disney as Captain Shelby in the Briar Patch, Deep Space 12 and other ships.
Which ran for 7 full seasons, 2 movies. 3 Spin off series Star Trek Odyssey. Star Trek Helena Chronicles, Federation One. Coupled with 2 audio series.

This month and next month sees release of two feature length cgi animated movies.

I DON’T AGREE, TO ME THEY FIT RIGHT IN. GIVE THEM A CHANCE..

  23. Lower Decks needs more love! I’m super psyched to see live-action versions of LD characters on crossing over to Strange New Worlds!

    1. It really is fun! We’ve been loving it!

  24. Didn’t you know the zip code of Star Fleet Academy is 90210?

    1. hahahaha that legitimately made me laugh. Thank you. :)

  25. DSN was slow developing between Season 1+2, but with DSN Season 3, and the Defiant, it turned out to be really cool….and before, the quarrel between Quark & Odo was always fun to watch…. ;-) I never liked VOY, because not of Captn. Janeway, but Neelix was getting on my nerves, as talker….and also episodes with like Space wales….OMG, terrible script, even more terrible executed, that was it for myself then.

And for the record, of course, i loved TOS, and even more TNG, that was the flagship series…and DSN like said before, turned out to be way interesting, as well as the Cardassians. (not Kardashians, no pun intended)

Into short, i love Star Trek since my child days, as well as Star Wars….and many more things.

    1. What’s your favorite of the new series on Paramount+?

      1. Since Marc didn’t reply I will. lol. As we don’t yet have all the series that are going to be airing this year this is somewhat speculative. I am enjoying Picard Season 3 a good bit more than the first two seasons but if pressed I would have to say Strange New Worlds is my current favorite. That is based on the first season of SNW and I expect (/hope) season 2 will be at least as good. Picard will probably end up being 2nd or 3rd on my list of current favorites, depending on how good the next season of DISCO turns out to be. Just so we’re on the same page time wise, I’m writing this after watching “Seventeen Seconds”, S3 E3 of Picard.

        Live Long and Prosper!

I would watch Star Trek: Prodigy except there are way too many hyperactive commercials on Nickelodeon. Truly, I wanted to watch the show–but really couldn’t because of the awful commercials they are pitching to our kids. Have you seen them?

  29. It looks like a new series for Jack Crusher and the Enterprise G could be in the works with Q

    1. Chris Davis Avatar

Star Trek Picard season 3 was fantastic. In my oppinion it was written perfectly as a one last hoo-ra for the TNG crew and the perfect jumping off point for the next great series.. There is way too much setup of plot and character to not assume we are going to see 7of9 captain the Enterprise G, with a LaForge, and Crusher/Picard at her side. I bet the next-next generation crew even boldly goes beyond where the previous generation boldly went.. I’m hoping for beyond the milky way galaxy as STP is full of possible ways that could happen. Theres the anomoly being monitored by Girardi the Benevolent-Borg Queen (my guess is thats the nasty AI from another galaxy we saw defeated in season 1 – the ones the tal-shiar are afraid of..), also theres Q who can snap his fingers and send the enterprise anywhere, theres left over Borg trans-warp conduits, or even the Watcher (Wesley Crusher)… I can’t wait to see where Seven and her crew go from here!
