Walt Disney Imagineering Helps Tam O’Shanter Restaurant Celebrate its 100th Anniversary

Tam O’Shanter restaurant is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Walt Disney Imagineering is helping with this celebration. The restaurant, also known as “The Tam” was founded in 1922 and was designed to be like it came from a fairytale. This celebration is being commemorated with an original painting that was created by Imagineer and Executive Creative Designer, Chris Turner. The painting was given to Tam’s team this week.

The painting was inspired by the restaurant’s unique interior and the staff’s uniforms. The painting also includes representations of multiple iconic Disneyland attractions that were developed by Imagineers through the years where Imagineers have been visiting the Tam O’Shanter Inn. The painting will be permanently at “The Tam.” It will join two other existing pieces that overlooks Table 31, also known as “the Disney table” by Imagineers, Disney employees, and fans. One of the other pieces was from Disney Legend John Hench.

Walt Disney Imagineering announced the painting and celebration on a post on Instagram that also shared the painting.

We’re thrilled to be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Tam O’Shanter restaurant – a local favorite in Los Angeles, CA and a very special part of Walt Disney Imagineering’s own history.

Founded in 1922, “The Tam” was designed to stand out from other restaurants in the area as a fairytale-like building, complete with a thatched roof, plaster walls, fireplace and wooden beams. While the restaurant was famously a frequent dining spot for many famous silent film stars, it also became a favorite for Disney employees. In the late 1920s and throughout the ‘30s, the Tam was even nicknamed “The Disney Studio Commissary,” for how often Walt Disney and his staff would visit.

To commemorate the Tam’s centennial anniversary and celebrate our enduring relationship, we’re excited to reveal an original painting created by Imagineer and Executive Creative Designer, Chris Turner that was presented to the Tam’s team this week. The piece was inspired by the unique interior of the restaurant, including the staff’s signature tartan uniforms. Chris included representations of iconic Disneyland attractions developed by Imagineers during various chapters of our history with the Tam O’Shanter Inn. The painting will have a permanent home at the Tam, joining two other existing pieces including one from Disney legend John Hench, and another that looks over Table 31 – “the Disney table,” as it’s lovingly known by Imagineers, Disney employees and fans.
