Gilbert Gottfried, Voice of Iago, Passes Away at 67

Gilbert Gottfried was an iconic comedian with an iconic voice. For Disney fans, he was also the voice of Iago in Disney’s animated classic Aladdin. This is a role he carried on well after the first film. Today his family shared on social media that he had passed away after a long illness.

Glenn Schwartz, his publicist and long-time friend, confirmed that Gottfried died at 2:35 p.m. ET Tuesday from recurrent ventricular tachycardia due to myotonic dystrophy type II.

The comedian performed stand-up for over 50 years. He also appeared on the big screen and small screen through the years. He was known for his humor and also for pushing the limits of what was acceptable. This sometimes caused him trouble. He also was known for his kindness and today countless stories and tributes have been shared from friends, family, and even people who had a random encounter with him.

The world will mourn his loss and his iconic voice that brought to life so many different characters through the years. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his friends and family today.
