California Governor in No Hurry to Reopen Theme Parks

California Governor Gavin Newsom has provided some updates regarding the reopening of theme parks in California during a press conference today. For those who are hoping that theme parks will be opening soon, don’t hold your breath. The Governor made it quite clear that he is in no rush to have theme parks reopen any time soon.

“We don’t anticipate in the immediate term any of these larger parks opening until we see more stability in terms of the data,” Newsom said. “We feel there’s no hurry to put out guidelines, and we continue to work with the industry.”

The Governor went on to acknowledge Disney’s “frustration” but confirmed that “We are going to be stubborn about it.”

This is the first time that the Governor has responded to Disney’s push for reopening guidelines from the state. Newsom also addressed Disney Chairman Bob Iger’s recent departure from the economic recovery task force saying that “It didn’t come as a surprise to me at all. There are disagreements about opening a major theme park. We’re going to let science and data make that determination.” He did also note that before his departure, Iger had been “very active and very participatory” with the task force.

At this point, this leaves the reopening of the Disneyland Resort and other California theme parks in limbo with no unknown path to reopening without guidelines in place. This comes as Disney lays off 28,000 cast members, in part because of this ongoing closure of the Disneyland Resort theme parks and hotels.

Along with theme parks, local and state government officials, and health officials have all urged the governor to reopen theme parks and provide guides for how that will happen. For now, the reopening of the Disneyland Resort theme parks and hotels are at a standstill until something changes.

DAPS MAGIC will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available. What do you think about the California Governor’s decision to wait on providing guidelines for the reopening of theme parks in California? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
