Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is the box office winner once again. This comes 23 years after it last won at the box office. The last time it won was when it was reissued to theaters in 1997. The sequel to the original Star Wars movie was shown this weekend in 483 cinemas.
As movies have begun to reopen they have been showing previously released movies. This has included Ghostbusters, Jurassic Park, and Jaws. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back has won the weekend and was expected to pull in from $400k to $500k over the course of the weekend. The weekend will bring the movies total gross to approximately $290.4 million. During its initial run in 1980 Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back brought in $547 million globally and was the number one movie if the year. The 1997 edition of the movie added $67.6M to the movie’s total. It also is a part of the $10.3 billion that has been brought in by all the Star Wars movies.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back isn’t the only movie that did well this weekend, however. It was followed in second place by Black Panther at the box office with Inside Out coming in third.
As the entertainment still struggles to figure it ways through the coronavirus pandemic, previously released movies are being re-released for the theaters that have reopened. First release movies have been pushed back until theaters reopen and theatergoers begin to return to the movies.
