NHL Partners with Disney an Twitter Ahead of Season Return

NHL has announced a partnership with Disney and Twitter ahead of its August return. This comes as sports continue to return to the airwaves in new ways as in-person viewing is still on hold due to coronavirus. The news comes from the NHL.

Twitter will be offering two-minute Live Look-Ins of select NHL games during the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers and Stanley Cup Playoffs. Throughout this, polls will be utilized to determine what games feature Live Look-Ins.

The partnership with Disney Streaming Services, formerly Major League Baseball Advanced Media, will help bring NHL virtually to fans as well.

“NHL fans are fiercely passionate and are among the most engaged sports fans on social media,” said Heidi Browning, NHL Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer. “Everything our fans do shows us they want to have deeper connections with the League and our teams, and this exciting partnership with Twitter and Disney Streaming Services – especially during this unprecedented time of social distancing – provides the perfect platform to facilitate fan interaction and conversation, as well as drive broadcast tune-in. The 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers and Playoffs are going to be a wildly exciting and unique time for our game, and we’re thrilled to provide our fans this opportunity to demonstrate their team pride through voting for the games they want to see and to engage in conversation on social during game broadcasts.”

With Twitter and Disney Streaming Services working with the NHL, it is hoped that there will be a completely new and immersive virtual hockey experience for fans.

“The virtual fan experience has taken on a new meaning this year and we are excited to be partnering with Twitter and the NHL to launch these new interactive experiences for hockey fans during these unprecedented times,” said Barry Tishgart, SVP and General Manager, Hockey, Disney Streaming Services.

At this time it isn’t known exactly how (or if) Disney Streaming Services and Twitter will interact with each other with this partnership. Currently the official NHL app an NHL.TV is included with the Disney Streaming Services portfolio. Disney Streaming Services currently include Disney+, ESPN+, the NHL app and NHL.TV, and BAMTech Media. It will be interesting to see if this partnership with the NHL andd Disney Streaming Services expands in the future.
