Though Walt Disney World Resort is currently closed to the public, the magic doesn’t stop! This month, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has welcomed a new baby zebra and porcupine to the park. These new babies were born to animals that already live in Disney’s herds and will continue to live on property!
The female prehensile-tailed porcupine, who has yet to be named by Disney, was born Feb. 25, 2020. In the video below, you can see that she is covered in a fine red fur coat that has quills underneath that will harden as she grows. You may recognize her mom, Peri, from segments on Good Morning America and even One Day at Disney! This baby was born as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) program overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to ensure responsible breeding of threatened and endangered species.
On March 21, 2020, Disney welcomed the new female Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal! This 65-pound foal was born to first-time mother Heidi, who has been doing a wonderful job keeping an eye on her. This sweet baby zebra was up and moving just minutes after birth and has been very active and playful with her mom! We can’t wait to see this foal when we can all head back to Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.
