Jon Favreau is again making news on Instagram. On Christmas day, he shared an image of IG-88 on the set of The Mandalorian.
Jon Favreau’s Instagram Post
IG-88, originally appearing in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, was originally created to be an assassin droid. These are independently programmed droids that are mechanical killers with no masters. IG-88 would eventually go on to become a bounty hunter. He is seen in The Empire Strikes Back being hired, with other bounty hunters, by Darth Vader to pursue Han Solo and the crew of the Millennium Falcon.
From the looks of the photo, IG-88 in The Mandalorian will be recreated with practical effects. This is consistent with the narrative that the effects would be a mix of practical and digital for the show. This photo is exactly that with the physical IG-88 in front of a green screen. At this point, it isn’t known how large of a role IG-88 will be playing in the show.
The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal in the lead role, will arrive on Disney+ when it becomes available in late 2019. What do you think of the use of IG-88? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
