With Disney’s new streaming service to launch in 2019, the company has some major additions to make if they hope to will compete with Netflix and Amazon. Other streaming platforms are paving the way for how people watch shows and movies, with more original programming being produced by Netflix and Amazon. The shows are becoming mainstream, and even garnering accolades at the Emmy’s. Disney is also working on their own original content for their upcoming streaming service. This includes a “High School Musical” show, Star Wars series, and live action movies.
Variety is also reporting that Disney and Marvel are working on multiple series highlighting secondary Marvel characters. Currently, this includes Loki and Scarlet Witch and potentially others. The report states that Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olson are tapped to play the original roles. Neither Disney nor Marvel have confirmed the TV shows or casting of Hiddleston and Olson.
While Disney and Marvel have not confirmed these series, the two studios have proved that Marvel series have fared well on Netflix and television. It would be no surprise to see multiple Marvel characters who have yet to appear in their own stand-alone films, to have their own series. It would be a brilliant move for these shows to find a home exclusively on the streaming service, as it will be a huge draw for Marvel fans.
The new Disney streaming service will be a huge turning point for the way we watch Disney movies and shows, and I, for one, am excited to see what all they come up with! You can read more about what Bob Iger has said about the upcoming offerings of the service here.
*Disney and Marvel have yet to confirm or comment on these reports.
What do you think about potential Marvel character shows? Will you be subscribing to the service?
Until next time,
