Star Wars: The Last Jedi Takes Lucasfilm Deal Past Sale Price

There is a lot of news in the Star Wars universe since Disney purchased Lucasfilm five years ago. The $4.06 billion price tag at the time was a big number but now as Star Wars: The Last Jedi pushes towards making $1 billion itself, the investment by Disney in Lucasfilm is definitely paying off. It is expected that The Last Jedi should reach this mark sometime over the New Year’s Eve weekend.

Just at the box office alone, new Star Wars movies that have been released since the purchase of Lucasfilm have brought in more than the $4.06 billion purchase price. This number does not include marketing costs or production costs, but on the flip side, it also doesn’t include merchandise profits. What can be gleaned from this though is that what at first glance appeared to be a smart move by Disney just continues to look better and better as time goes by.

There have been three films released since Disney bought Lucasfilm. Star Wars: The Force Awakens brought in $2.068 globally at the box office. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story then proceeded to bring in $1.056 billion globally. With Star Wars: The Last Jedi pushing past the billion-dollar mark and several more Star Wars movies in the works, this milestone is just a first step towards what could be coming with this acquisition.

The acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney is just one of several that have happened under Disney CEO Bob Iger’s leadership. Under his watch, Disney has also purchased Pixar, Marvel, and now 21st Century Fox. It can only be surmised that the best is yet to come for Disney at the box office.
