He’s directed four Harry Potter films so why not direct a spinoff of the wizard series? That’s right, it is looking like David Yates will be directing Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This is the first in a spinoff franchise of the original Harry Potter franchise and Yates is negotiating to direct it. J.K. Rowling is currently writing the screenplay for this movie and is said to have a strong relationship with Yates, which is sure to come into play for his hiring.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them takes place in New York City some 70 years before the events originally chronicled in the Harry Potter books and then movies. This movie will follow the adventures of Newton Artemis Fido Scamander, who in Potter lore wrote a guidebook on magical beasts, after being commissioned to write the book.
“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling explained of the franchise.
Currently no roles have been cast, or at least announced, for this film. A shooting scheduled has not been announced either. All that is known is that the film is being written by Rowling, most likely directed by Yates, and will be cross promoted in every way imaginable by Warner Bros.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will hit theaters on November 18, 2016.
