0:04
i wonder if you can compare and contrast
0:06
kind of what your life and careers have
0:08
been like inside the Disneyland Fire
0:10
Department and outside an exterior fire
0:18
No honestly they they bring both
0:21
Um I started 21 years ago with Los
0:24
Angeles City Fire Department and then 6
0:26
years later I ended up here with the
0:29
Disneyland and I didn't think I was
0:32
going to last and here I am 15 years
0:34
later I mean uh doing the magic
0:38
protecting it for the cast members as
0:40
well as the guests that that come to
0:41
Disneyland on a regular basis as well as
0:44
you know providing a service with the
0:46
Los Angeles City Fire Department is it's
0:49
I couldn't ask for anything better
0:55
um completely different types of work
0:58
but I started here as uh as EMT with
1:03
first aid guest first aid for about 6
1:05
months prior to becoming a firefighter
1:07
here Uh just kind of providing help to
1:09
cast members guests uh and everyone in
1:12
between Uh and then it's a little
1:15
different um different job descriptions
1:18
but at the end of the day we're still
1:19
providing a service to the public or the
1:21
the uh the cast members and guests here
1:25
uh and doing everything we can to make
1:26
their days a little better
1:29
Did you guys respond to the fires and
1:32
can you tell us about that Sure Uh so I
1:34
was uh working at the um at the Sierra
1:37
Mad Fire Department the night that the
1:39
Eden fire broke out or I guess the
1:40
palisades as well Uh so yeah we're on
1:42
shift We got recalled as uh extra bodies
1:45
just to help deal with the wind event
1:47
that was going on in the San Gabriel
1:49
Valley area and Eden fire broke out We
1:53
were kind of monitoring that We
1:54
monitored the Palisades fire and uh next
1:57
thing you know the Eden fire started
1:59
cresting over our neighboring hills So
2:02
we went to work and just did what we
2:04
could to help put some fires out uh
2:06
tried to save some houses do what we
2:08
could to help out and uh just we did
2:11
what we've been training for our whole
2:16
I I was actually working here at the
2:19
resort when uh the fires broke out Soon
2:22
as I finished my shift I actually
2:23
responded same thing with the recall and
2:28
uh ended up being attached to the
2:31
incident for almost 23 days Mhm Which
2:35
which incident Uh Pacific Palace Palace
2:38
What did you guys I I know you probably
2:39
did a lot in 23 days but can you talk
2:41
about some of the things you did on the
2:42
first night You know it's hard to
2:45
explain like the the conditions you've
2:48
never you we planned for brush fires We
2:52
planned for wildland fire We planned for
2:54
all this stuff to go on But the
2:56
conditions and know what's going on it
2:59
just it I've never seen anything like
3:01
that in 21 years I'm pretty sure that
3:03
most people would say that they haven't
3:05
seen anything like that So
3:09
guessing you didn't come back to work
3:10
here for 23 days No they actually they
3:13
actually work with me Uh I talked with
3:15
the managers that are here and they uh
3:17
they understood and and they allowed me
3:20
to continue working over there and then
3:23
pick up the pieces when I came back over
3:26
How does it feel today to be honored and
3:28
thanked uh with the Cavalcade and all of
3:31
the other exciting things happening
3:34
Uh it's it's humbling It's it's pretty
3:37
cool that Disney is able to you know
3:39
recognize uh not just those of us here
3:42
but all the firefighters uh police
3:44
officers EMTs and uh so forth to that
3:47
responded to those events Uh it's a
3:49
super cool gesture Um feel honored to be
3:52
here also very humbling uh and also a
3:55
little bit awkward too during the
3:56
cavalcade cuz uh we're not into the all
3:59
the recognition and parades and stuff So
4:04
definitely definitely awkward Yeah Um
4:07
but I know there's you know there's
4:08
thousands of firefighters who deserve to
4:10
be in the parade with us Um that did a
4:13
lot Everyone worked together to to try
4:18
you know to carry out what he's saying
4:22
And it is truly an honor um piece like
4:25
there's to represent the women uh the
4:28
men and women of the fire service and be
4:30
able to be recognized This truly is an
4:32
honor Um I think there's plenty of
4:35
people that are just as deserving as
4:36
both of us Um just I think we're just
4:40
one of the lucky ones that that uh they
4:42
recognize But I'm f it's fantastic that
4:44
Disney actually is is recognizing and
4:48
appreciating everybody that provided a
4:50
service to during that whole time frame
4:54
Is it a different experience being here
4:56
today with everyone being recognized
4:59
than on a normal day at the resort Does
5:01
it just feel different Yeah it's like I
5:04
said it's for us it's awkward because
5:06
we're not we're in the limelight but
5:09
we're usually behind the scenes It's
5:12
this to be put out there and recognized
5:16
just for the work that we normally do
5:18
It's it truly is an honor And it it is
5:20
like I said it's real kind of uh awkward
5:23
because we're not we're not used to it
5:25
We're not used to being hey come over
5:27
here and do this versus just doing what
5:30
we normally do on a regular basis
5:37
What's a what's a little known fact
5:39
about the Disneyland Fire Department
5:40
that most people don't know
5:44
That you would like to get out there
5:48
I don't know I think everyone kind of
5:51
knows I don't know I I don't know what
5:54
would be little known cuz uh
5:56
everything's I mean we we we don't
5:59
actually we don't actually work at the
6:01
fire station on Main Street Okay Right
6:03
Right That is a true that is a that is a
6:05
true fact We we do we are behind the
6:09
scenes We do have three different
6:10
stations that we respond out of and I
6:13
mean and factual is that you know we're
6:16
here to protect the magic of uh all all
6:19
the guests and cast members that that
6:22
are here at the resort
6:24
How many fatherson teams are at the
6:26
Disneyland Fire Department
6:38
um family members have come and gone I
6:41
mean it was just a unique thing that for
6:45
that I showed up 6 months after dad was
6:48
hired here and I had no idea he was
6:50
working in Disneyland So that was the
6:52
the the fun factual thing for me was
6:55
showing up for what we call traditions
6:57
where they they introduce you into the
7:00
the Disneyland culture And as I'm
7:03
walking in dad's walking off his shift
7:06
So you didn't know he worked here I had
7:08
no idea whatsoever And here we are He's
7:11
16 years into it I'm a little over 15 So
7:14
I guess you could say he didn't help you
7:16
get this job No not at all Not at all
7:21
Um I just think being here at the resort
7:24
we know you guys work here and I would
7:26
assume you guys are somewhat fans of
7:27
Disneyland too Is there any like
7:29
favorite ride or favorite snack you guys
7:34
Well I always Well the the the Rice
7:37
Krisp Mickey Rice Krispie treat is
7:39
always a fan favorite Uh ride-wise I
7:42
think it's usually it's Pirates of the
7:44
Caribbean I always I always enjoy that
7:47
Yeah I think I don't really have a
7:50
favorite ride I guess Rise of the
7:52
Resistance when I can get on it Uh
7:55
that's probably the coolest ride I've
7:57
been on Um and then I think my favorite
7:59
treat would be the Luro toffee Oh yeah
8:03
that's by far my favorite And uh I like
8:05
introducing other people to that so they
8:07
can find the same addiction that I have
8:09
Um so yeah you guys are kind of making
