On this day in 1980, Walt Disney Home Entertainment released its first movies on videocassette. A total of 13 Disney titles were available to rent from Fotomat kiosks in four cities across the U.S. The price was $12 for a 5-day VHS rental, or about $50 in today’s money! Some of the films included were ‘Pete’s Dragon,’ ‘The Black Hole,’ ‘The Love Bug,’ ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks,’ ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,’ and three compilations of Mickey Mouse cartoons.
