On this day in 1989, a 2-hour television special, “The Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park Grand Opening,” aired the night before the park’s debut. The program featured many celebrities of the time, including John Ritter as the host. Smokey Robinson opened the show with a lavish musical number down Hollywood Boulevard. Fittingly, the special closed with “Hooray for Hollywood,” an elaborate dance routine that would win an Emmy for Best Choreography!
