0:04
Hi, I'm Mr. Dapsson and I'm here at the
0:06
Disneyland Resort with my new friend
0:07
Grace, who has one of the coolest jobs
0:10
for the Lunar New Year celebration. But
0:12
before we get into that, we should say
0:14
everything we're talking about is going
0:16
on at the Disneyland Resort through
0:18
February 22nd. And you don't want to
0:21
miss it cuz there's incredible
0:22
entertainment, there's incredible food,
0:24
characters, merchandise, all of that
0:26
stuff. But today, right now, we're going
0:29
to talk about the costumes that the
0:31
characters are wearing, which you had a
0:33
very important role in making happen.
0:36
So, Grace, tell us about what you do and
0:38
and maybe a little bit about these
0:40
Yeah, sure. So, um it takes a huge team
0:43
of people and I'm just lucky to be one
0:45
of those people who gets to work on
0:46
these projects. Uh, as a designer, I
0:49
kind of um set what the design is going
0:53
to be and then overlook the process
0:55
working with a lot of different people
0:57
to kind of help create everything from
1:00
So, does that mean you're uh an artist
1:02
obviously at some level, but like what
1:04
is the process for, you know, something
1:07
let's let's say we've got Donald and
1:09
Daisy here who are in adorable costumes
1:12
What is that process like of like, oh,
1:14
we want this to end up being a thing?
1:16
Yeah. So, um, we actually partner with a
1:19
local Disney artist. Her name is Anne
1:21
Shen, and I'm sure you've seen a lot of
1:23
her work in the parks, around the parks.
1:25
Uh, so she has created all of the
1:28
character art that you see on the
1:30
banners throughout the park,
1:32
um, for the festival. And so, we work
1:34
with her, um, very far in advance. She
1:37
creates these adorable character art for
1:40
us to kind of turn into
1:42
three-dimensional living wearable uh
1:45
pieces of clothing for our characters.
1:47
So, um that's sort of how this all
1:49
started out. And we've had a mission for
1:51
a very long time to make and expand
1:53
Lunar New Year here so that it's more
1:55
inclusive, um more multicultural, and um
1:59
just allows more people to celebrate and
2:02
Now, could you tell me about what we're
2:04
looking at right here? Yeah. So, uh,
2:05
we've got Donald and Daisy, who are in
2:08
sort of, uh, more traditional Chinese
2:10
attire. Um, and so, of course, they're
2:12
in red and gold, which is very common
2:14
and, uh, you know, very auspicious
2:16
colors for Chinese New Year. And we've
2:18
got some cute details that sort of
2:20
highlight, you know, their personalities
2:22
as well. So, you know, Daisy's got a
2:25
little bit of sass with her flouncy
2:27
skirt and she's got some little ribbon
2:30
and, of course, her, you know, big hair
2:31
bow with the flowers. So, that's always
2:33
fun to do. And um you know, Donald is
2:36
just there to match her. You know what?
2:38
You know what I mean? She's the star.
2:40
as every good boyfriend should be. Is
2:42
that what you do? Is like you're
2:43
supposed to be there to make your
2:44
girlfriend look good. Is that Is that
2:46
Yeah. Just Just kidding. Donald is
2:48
looking very sharp and handsome in his
2:51
He told me he's number one just a few
2:55
Main character energy. That's all I'm
3:00
So, what else we got? We got Mickey and
3:02
Minnie. Yeah, we got Mickey and Minnie.
3:04
Uh they actually debuted last Lunar New
3:06
Year Festival. They are in Korean humble
3:09
which is just sort of a you know
3:10
traditional Korean formal wear and uh
3:13
they were a huge hit with everyone
3:15
because as you know here in Southern
3:16
California we have a really really
3:18
vibrant and very diverse Asian-American
3:21
community. So um this was really special
3:24
for me too because I'm I'm
3:25
Korean-American. So, uh, very very close
3:28
to my heart, but, uh, we put a lot of
3:31
work and time and effort into making
3:33
sure that these two looked as authentic
3:36
but as true to themselves as possible.
3:38
And is there something that as you look
3:40
at these costumes that you kind of it
3:42
makes you smile like a certain detail or
3:44
something people should look for when
3:46
they meet Mickey and Minnie in the
3:48
Um, I mean, it's so hard because I kind
3:50
of just, you know, it's just like it
3:51
just makes me happy seeing them at all.
3:52
You know, it's very special. But um
3:55
there's a lot of attention to detail
3:57
that we've put into everything. So take
3:59
a close look at like embroidery and like
4:01
the the subtle patterns in the fabric um
4:04
cuz those are the things that really
4:05
bring something to life um that are
4:08
rally true to the authenticity of that
4:10
culture. So it's just really taking it
4:12
all in and taking the time to appreciate
4:15
I love it. And we have a few more behind
4:18
me if I don't get into their way. Um I
4:20
love Chip andale, but let's go through
4:22
the whole lineup real quick. Could you
4:23
tell us what their inspiration was and
4:25
and kind of what's going on?
4:27
Totally. So, we have Clarabel and Goofy
4:29
here. I'm very which I'm very excited
4:31
about. They are wearing Vietnamese AI.
4:33
Um we as we all know here, we have a
4:35
huge Vietnamese community. So, I'm very
4:38
excited to debut this. Um they uh in
4:42
Vietnamese culture, color is really
4:44
important. Um and so when you see them
4:47
in person, you'll just gasp. They are uh
4:50
stunning, vibrant. they are really the
4:52
stars wherever they're out and about. So
4:56
take again take a closer look at the
4:57
detail because a lot of like love and
4:59
heart was put into these costumes. Um
5:02
and so yeah, just and you know down to
5:04
the embroidery, the beading, the
5:06
patterns. So it'll be a really special
5:08
moment for um a lot of guests here at
5:14
a horse of course it's year of the
5:16
horse. Uh we have our very own horse
5:20
collar who is um kind of making a
5:22
comeback. Let's not for you know can't
5:24
forget who he is. He is wearing uh
5:27
traditional Chinese attire and so we
5:30
I was going to guess that.
5:31
I I was like I feel like there's a
5:33
Yes. Um if you generally see red and
5:36
golds I would say it's very Yeah. Yeah.
5:38
Um that's a good clue for that. And so
5:40
we wanted to put him in something that
5:42
looked really formal and sharp and we
5:44
wanted him just to look really nice and
5:45
special because this is his ear of
5:48
Yeah. Oh, thank you. Um and again, you
5:50
know, the details, he's wearing a really
5:52
nice jade necklace. Um and he's got some
5:55
really beautiful embroidery. So, you
5:57
know, just take a moment, take it all
5:59
in. Um and you know, let him know it's
6:05
Live it up. Live it up. And then Chip
6:10
you make them every time more adorable
6:12
than the last. I don't know how you guys
6:14
do this, but uh what is the inspiration
6:20
so, as we know, Chip and Dale are
6:22
probably some of the most playful
6:24
characters we have here. And uh what
6:27
better than to make them lion dancers
6:30
and dragon dancers for Lunar New Year.
6:32
Uh what could be more special for them?
6:34
So, you're going to have to check them
6:35
out in Mulan's procession. Um, they get
6:37
to do some really fun, playful things
6:39
there. But, yeah, again, um, this was
6:43
definitely, you know, a challenge to
6:45
figure out how to make all of the
6:48
pieces, but our team did an amazing and
6:50
beautiful job. So, huge shout out to
6:52
them. Um, it literally takes a village
6:55
here. Um, and so, yeah,
6:58
take a look. Uh, soak it all in. Enjoy
7:01
those details. So, it sounds like you
7:03
have a very fun job, but also a very
7:05
fulfilling job. Is that is that a
7:10
Yeah, I would say this is probably um
7:13
one of Well, this is one of my favorite
7:15
projects times of year to work on, which
7:18
makes just doing this job even more
7:20
special. Uh yeah, it's I I couldn't be
7:23
happier working here, truly.
7:25
Well, thank you so much for sharing
7:27
about the costumes. I always love seeing
7:30
the costumes, but when you hear stuff
7:31
like this, it makes you look for these
7:33
details. Like I'm I'm thinking now back
7:35
about you talking about the woven stuff
7:37
is even looking right over here. I can
7:39
see this, but I didn't necessarily
7:41
notice that when we were taking pictures
7:42
a few minutes ago. So definitely check
7:45
out the details. Check out all of the
7:46
costumes. You have until February 22nd,
7:49
so make sure you don't miss any of that.
