I am here at the season of the forest
0:06
kickoff event and I would love to hear
0:08
all about the high Republic books we
0:10
have in front of us including the new
0:12
one so could you tell me each who you
0:13
are and uh uh my name is Charles Soul
0:16
I'm one of the high Republic uh authors
0:18
I've written the first novel in the high
0:20
Republic light of the Jedi back in 2021
0:22
which I really enjoyed thank you very
0:23
much I'm glad to hear it I liked it too
0:24
and then I have Charles of the Jedi
0:26
coming in June which is the final novel
0:28
uh which will wrap the whole Saga up
0:29
with working out for years and years so
0:31
and my love hi I'm Kevin Scott um I've
0:34
been working on the hor public since the
0:35
beginning novels audios animated
0:38
episodes and lots of comics mainly the
0:40
Marvel Run which is the final runs
0:42
happening right now for the Jedis very
0:44
near the end I'm George man I joined a
0:47
little bit later than these guys um but
0:49
I've been working through um various
0:52
different phases writing lots of
0:53
different Books and Comics and audio
0:54
books and you have a new book out soon
0:56
right or is it out it's out tears of the
0:57
nameless yeah tears of the nameless tell
0:59
us about it
1:00
it's oh it's quite dark book it's uh
1:03
it's kind of the um The Dark Night of
1:06
the Soul before you know the before the
1:08
end um so it's kind of the couple of the
1:12
Jedi the younger Jedi reath and Amo
1:14
going on a mission to try and figure out
1:17
what's really going on and and how
1:19
they're going to work out how to stop
1:20
the nameless and and the blight and um
1:23
and facing up to kind of the darkness
1:25
that's out there mhm um just to to
1:28
briefly for those at home don't really
1:30
know how the high Republic works the
1:31
high Republic has many many uh books and
1:34
stories and comics and audio dramas
1:36
within it Each of which stand on their
1:37
own you can pick up any one of them and
1:39
read a great story from start to finish
1:40
but together they make up like a
1:42
multi-chapter multi-year story that's
1:45
just enormous uh it's like the Star Wars
1:47
saga itself all the stories you've read
1:48
all these different pieces fit into the
1:50
bigger history and so we five or six
1:53
years ago set out to build a very deeply
1:56
interconnected set of stories that would
1:57
tell one large story while also make
1:59
sure that every book within it was
2:01
incredibly cool and awesome on its own
2:03
so every comic every audio thing every
2:05
novel they're all amazing so T the
2:07
nameless is George's latest one but you
2:09
could pick up any of them and have an
2:11
amazing time well one of the things I
2:12
really appreciated with them too is you
2:13
have different authors doing different
2:15
books yeah and so they each have a
2:16
slight different perspective and voice
2:19
that's coming out of them could you talk
2:21
a little bit about what that's like to
2:23
create a bigger picture story that
2:25
Interlink but also being true to
2:27
yourself as an author which really
2:29
excites and to be honest I mean when we
2:31
started with the original five and then
2:32
it's grown to the The Wider group we've
2:34
all learned from each other as well
2:35
because each PE person came with their
2:37
own background their own style their own
2:39
you know talents and strengths and so
2:41
it's been great and some of the best
2:42
moments have been when we've had to come
2:44
together and had strous conversations
2:48
sometimes about things um but out of out
2:50
of those conversations the most exciting
2:52
ideas have happened um and it's been and
2:54
it's it's a proper team we've become a
2:56
family of writers and writing you're on
2:58
your own so often so to do something
3:00
like this has been spectacular and there
3:02
there's loads of room for creativity
3:03
within framework that we we build
3:06
there's kind of fixed points in the
3:07
storytelling that we know we have to hit
3:09
but we don't necessarily kind of dictate
3:11
to people how they have to get the
3:13
characters to that point so you can kind
3:15
of bring yourself to those books that
3:16
you're writing and and like Charles said
3:18
it's you're aiming to tell a great story
3:20
within the framework of that one book
3:22
people can pick up and read and you're
3:24
getting to a point where you're handling
3:25
off the characters to the next person in
3:27
the AL those characters tell the rest of
3:29
the story so it's it's been a great
3:31
experience a really collaborative
3:32
experience and it's also the added group
3:34
member the fifth Beetle it's the fans
3:37
have been reading it because their
3:38
response is is is shaped as well some of
3:41
the stories we've got a character laor D
3:43
who Charles introduced in the first
3:45
novel in like the Jedi and she's really
3:47
grown on her own and I've had the
3:49
pleasure of writing her the last couple
3:50
of years and the response from the the
3:53
fans has been amazing and so when you
3:55
start seeing that you know how fans are
3:57
responding to a character it does
3:58
inspire you as well it get you know gets
4:00
you excited and think well what else can
4:02
we do so as George says we've had we've
4:05
given ourselves the freedom to let it
4:06
grow beyond our original plans as well
4:09
so when you come up with a new character
4:10
is that the individual author is it
4:12
someone from lucas films that says hey
4:14
we'd like this is it kind of a
4:17
all that's cool yeah I mean there's
4:19
there's we will we will hear from Lucas
4:21
film talking about ways that we might
4:22
connect the high Republic with elements
4:24
of larger storytelling for example those
4:26
High Republic books that intersect with
4:28
that too where we are standing right now
4:29
um in in Galaxy's Edge but it's it's
4:32
always about thinking about the way that
4:33
the story We Tell is part of the larger
4:36
gigantic Star Wars story um but also
4:39
again everything is very like the
4:40
emotional beats have to stand and work
4:42
on their own the characters have to live
4:43
and breathe on their own um and it's
4:45
been really spectacular because you know
4:48
we we've gotten to steer essentially a
4:51
Star Wars Trilogy I mean kind more but
4:53
like like a huge Star Wars saga within
4:56
the publishing world and and things like
4:58
the Acolyte and video games and young ji
5:00
Adventures um that we just kind of made
5:03
up one day it's really it's really a
5:05
spectacular feeling because we've all
5:06
loved Star Wars since we really L I'm
5:08
sure most of the people watching this
5:09
have too and to be able to contribute it
5:11
to it so meaningfully is as
5:14
Aston that is very cool uh getting
5:18
started was that overwhelming exciting
5:20
exhilarating yes terrifying everything
5:23
you can imagine yeah I mean it was the
5:26
original five of us were sitting in
5:28
Skywalker Ranch going how have we got
5:30
into Skywalker Ranch it was like you
5:32
know it was incredible they must have
5:33
made a mistake yeah exactly but that
5:35
just that environment mean that place is
5:37
is created to create and so that was
5:40
yeah that was the beginning of all but
5:41
again then when new people came in it
5:43
just all got bigger everything got
5:45
bigger everything got more excited so
5:47
it's been been phenomenal and there was
5:48
still a part of me going well I'm just a
5:50
little 10-year-old kid from from the UK
5:52
what am I doing here um but that feeds
5:54
into it because you know these
5:56
characters matter to us and they matter
5:58
to other people and it it goes you know
6:00
that actually is a point I would make
6:01
which is that the way the thing that
6:03
feels different now versus the beginning
6:05
is that the beginning we were you know
6:07
working in a vacum right we're creating
6:08
this thing that we were very proud of
6:10
but we didn't know how if was going to
6:11
work how was going whatever but now with
6:13
these last stories which we're in as we
6:15
speak to you we're in the last wave of
6:17
stories coming out like between now and
6:19
June the last things will happen and
6:21
we're writing this and putting these
6:22
things out in a world where a high
6:24
Republic is extremely well known and
6:25
well loved and characters like people
6:27
have expectations for how those
6:28
characters are going to be or treated
6:30
and we we have all of that in our heads
6:32
because we're paying attention but we
6:33
also know that we need to do the things
6:36
with and to and for those characters
6:37
that are write the best for the story so
6:39
I so the the nerves that I feel with
6:41
draws to the Jedi coming out in June
6:43
they're very different than the nerves I
6:44
felt with play to the Jedi because now
6:46
people already know what we're doing and
6:47
like they want the endings they want uh
6:50
but I think we did a great job I think
6:51
everybody really did and I think it's
6:53
going to land really well and it's only
6:55
the beginning a lot of ways that's
6:57
that's awesome okay final question first
7:00
Star Wars memory for each of you um mine
7:03
was reading the Marvel Comics and a
7:05
green rabbit turning up and my life was
7:07
never never the same again love it mine
7:10
was being in the cinema with my
7:11
grandfather at the age of four watching
7:13
Empire Strikes Back and seeing rdt going
7:15
scen and like that was it yeah mine was
7:18
also Empire Strikes Back in the theater
7:20
the the moment when you first see the
7:21
the adats kind of through the macro
7:23
binoculars kind of looming in out of the
7:24
snow you're like uh-oh this is going to
7:26
be trouble and it was trouble it sure
7:28
was love it to this yes is thank
7:31
goodness thank you guys thank you thank
7:34
you
