The youth movement fought against the poor wages offered by the Pulitzer and Hearst newspaper companies. ‘Newsies’ was not a box office success but found a cult following after its home video release. Alan Menken wrote 12 original songs for the film, which became a driving force for a successful ‘Newsies’ Broadway musical nearly 20 years later.
