Disney Cascade of Lights

Disney Gives Behind-the-Scenes Look at ‘Disney Cascade of Lights’ Ahead of Disney Adventure World Debut

Disney Cascade of Lights will soon be lighting up the night around Adventure Bay at Disney Adventure World. This nighttime spectacular takes Disney magic and storytelling to a whole new level, which promises to wow guests when they visit Disneyland Paris. This show uses new storytelling techniques and technology as it tells a heroic narrative.

Many elements come together to make Disney Cascade of Lights so magical. This includes hundreds of drones, choreographed fountains, projections, water screens, and pyrotechnics. The technology isn’t the only thing that makes this show so distinct, however. The approach to heroes is also different from that traditionally taken by Disney. Disney chose to focus on everyday heroes in the audience who do incredible things in their everyday lives, along with the iconic Disney characters that we know and love.

This became the creative heartbeat of the show. Bringing this vision to life on a lake that is surrounded by guests required some creative thinking. Instead of traditional actors, the story is told with fountains, lights, water screens, pyrotechnics, and aquatic drones. The aquatic drones are a first for any Disney Parks nighttime spectacular.

Aquatic Drones

Disney entered a whole new realm of storytelling with Disney Cascade of Lights. The use of aquatic drones has never been done before by Disney. Disney shared about this new storytelling technology in the following way:

Early virtual programming helped outline the flow of the show, but when the team finally transitioned to seeing it live on the lake, that’s when the story found its soul. Together they finetuned cue after cue, from lighting and media to pyro. Absolutely nothing was left unturned, with every detail carefully shaped to ensure each moment lived up to the team’s vision.

While aerial drones provide soaring imagery, the brand-new aquatic drones push the boundaries of nighttime entertainment in an exciting new direction. Skimming just above the surface of the water, they bring the show closer to the audience than ever, deepening the sense of immersion.

Disneyland Paris is no stranger to drone technology, but this new approach introduced a unique challenge as the drones would need to perform in damp conditions and in close proximity to pyrotechnics. To meet that demand, the standard drones were upgraded to be more durable and waterproof.

Along with all of the amazing visual elements of the show, it is accompanied by an incredible orchestral score that was recorded at the historic Abbey Road Studios in London. This gives a cinematic richness and unexpected immersion that envelops the audience all around the bay, no matter where they happen to be standing.

We Can Be Heroes

The show has a new original song called We Can Be Heroes that is at its heart. This is an anthem that celebrates the hero within everyone. It was also one of the earliest creative elements that came into being. From the first demo, the Disney team knew this song had emotion, texture, and the embodiment of the heroic spirit.

Some of Disney’s most beloved songs from Walt Disney Animation Studios films that mark emotional turning points in the hero’s journey are woven around the new music. Some of these songs include:

  • Reflection from Mulan
  • Zero to Hero and Go The Distance from Hercules
  • How Far I’ll Go from Moana
  • Try Everything from Zootopia

These songs were chosen because they pose the question at the core of becoming a hero, Disney shared: What am I capable of becoming?
