This October, there is a fun offering that can be found at the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. A Halloween Time treat, pumpkins are being carved before the eyes of guests on select days at these two hotels. Our very own Doug Marsh can be found creating magic as he transforms pumpkins into various characters from the vast collection found in the Disney library.
On Sunday, Mr. Daps and Clocky (from Sent From Disneyland) stopped by the Disneyland Hotel to see what Doug was carving. Walking up to the carving station just outside of the Fantasy Tower, it quickly became evident that it would be something related to Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. Doug had just started carving the pumpkin and happily shared what he was working on. In the next few minutes, the general shape of Mike Wazowski came to life before our eyes! We left him to do his magic and returned near the end of his time at the Disneyland Hotel.
Upon returning, we could see that Mike Wazowski really had come to life. The carved pumpkin, which wasn’t quite completed yet, also had Mike Wazowski holding a pumpkin that he had carved himself, of himself. In basically three hours, Doug took a pumpkin and transformed it into a beautiful work of art. Ever the perfectionist, there were other things he’d like to have done. To everyone who walked up and saw this magnificent pumpkin, it looked incredible! Check it out here:
This wasn’t the only pumpkin that Doug quickly carved on Sunday, however. After three hours at the Disneyland Hotel and a quick break, Doug could be found in the evening at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. This time, Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove was the character that came to life on the face of the pumpkin. In the three hours that Doug did this, people came and took pictures of the pumpkin, and with it. Others sat at nearby tables and watched Doug do his magic.
Once again, a plain-looking pumpkin suddenly popped to life as Doug carved his way into it. It was incredible to see how something that looked so simple at first turned into a masterful work of art. Doug has been carving pumpkins for 25 years, and he clearly has honed his skills over the years. This is a skill that not many can boast on their resume. It is also one that brings joy and delights those who get to see it in action. The results are equally awesome.
Doug will be carving pumpkins two more times during this Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort. Here are the posted dates:
