In just a couple of months, Zootopia 2 will arrive in theaters and at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Zootopia: Better Zoogether! will be opening. These aren’t the only projects based on this world that are in the works, however. Disney Theatrical Productions is developing a musical based on the original film. According to an Equity audition notice, a 90-minute musical version of the animated film is being worked on for a professional League of Resident Theatres (LORT) production. There are also plans for both professional and amateur licensing.
According to the audition notice, the musical is based on a book by Sara Wordsworth. Wordsworth has collaborated extensively with Disney Theatrical Productions before. Their work together has included productions for Broadway and the Disney Cruise Line. Music and lyrics are by Jaheem Toombs. Matte Martinez provides additional music and lyrics. Connor Gallagher is directing the production with Ian Weinberger as the music supervisor. The audition is on Monday, September 22, 2025, in New York City at Ripley-Grier Studios. Currently, the roles being sought are Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, Dawn Bellweather, and Chief Bobo.

Zootopia is a movie that came to theaters in 2016 from Walt Disney Animation Studios. It was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, with Jared Bush as co-director. Ginnifer Goodwin voiced Judy Hopps, Jason Bateman lent his voice to Nick Wilde, and Idris Elba brought Chief Bogo’s voice to life. Other cast members included Jenny Slate, J.K. Simmons, and Octavia Spencer. The movie earned over $1 billion at the box office and also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It led to a sequel being developed, a new area at Shanghai Disneyland, and the new attraction that will open in November at Walt Disney World’s Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
