On this day in 1955, ‘Lady and the Tramp’ was released in theaters. The story of a romance between Lady, a pampered Cocker Spaniel, and Tramp, a streetwise mutt, was inspired by Ward Greene’s short story, “Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog,” first published in ‘Cosmopolitan’ magazine in 1945. ‘Lady and the Tramp’ was the first feature-length animation produced in the CinemaScope widescreen process and the first distributed by Buena Vista Film Distribution.
