Disney Cruise Line Honored for Commitment to Sustainability

The Disney Cruise Line was honored earlier this month for its commitment to sustainability. On June 6, 2025, the Disney Cruise Line was awarded the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s 2024 Blue Circle Award. This is a recognition of Disney’s ongoing commitment to operating responsibly in the region.

Jessica Lyons, manager of port planning and operations at Disney Cruise Line, accepts award from Peter Xotta, president and CEO of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, and Cathy McLay, chair of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s board of directors.

The Disney Cruise Line has received the Blue Circle Award for 12 years now. This marks every year that the Disney Wonder has homeported in Vancouver. The award celebrates Disney’s participation in the port’s voluntary EcoAction Program. This encourages the use of innovative technologies to minimize the maritime industry’s environmental impact on the region.

As part of Disney’s own environmental goals, Disney Cruise line continues to innovate with new initiatives to reduce emissions and waste. For example, on its legacy ships (the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder), the Disney Cruise Line now uses hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a part of its strategy to reduce emissions. HVO is a renewable diesel that is used to run the ship. It is made of sustainable sources, including recycled cooking oils and waste animal fats.

Another way the Disney Wonder reduces emissions is by utilizing Vancouver’s shore power technology while visiting. Shore power allows cruise ships to turn off their engines while docked and “plug in” to the port’s power source. This is then used to run all onboard systems as normal. This allows the Disney Wonder to save fuel and reduce air emissions while connected to shore power.
