On this day in 1960, Satellite View of America closed at Disneyland. It had been an opening day attraction called Space Station X-1. The walkthrough display was influenced by rocket engineer Werner von Braun’s theories about rockets and satellites to give guests a view of the United States from orbit. Satellites had not been sent to space yet when it was developed. Claude Coats and Peter Ellenshaw painted the gigantic background that created the effect of space. [65 years ago in 2025]
