The Acolyte had the most successful premiere on Disney+ earlier this year. However, when the series came to an end, nothing was heard about a second season. When the series launched on June 4th, it had 4.8 million views on its first day. By the fifth day, it had 11.1 million views. However, it is not receiving a second season.
Recently, Co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, Alan Bergman, sat down with Vulture for an interview. This interview happened to cover quite a few Star Wars projects, including the fate of The Acolyte. What it all comes down to is that it didn’t make sense financially for the series to get a second season.
“We were happy with our performance, but it wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure of that title, quite frankly, to go and make a season two,” Bergman said. “So that’s the reason why we didn’t do that.”
Bergman noted that “Skeleton Crew is in process now, so we’ll see. We’ve seen some growth on that. We’ll see how that goes. As you said, the reviews have been excellent on Skeleton Crew, so we’ll have to see how that all plays out as it moves forward.” This doesn’t make any promises for the future of this new Star Wars series. Only time will tell.
One thing Bergman clearly is excited about is the second season of Andor. He said, “we have Andor season two, which we’re really excited about. It is excellent. I’ve watched all the episodes, and it is a fantastic season.”
He also referenced the second season of Ahsoka along with other series that are in development for a galaxy far, far away. What the future holds for Star Wars and the rest of the content coming from The Walt Disney Company really comes down to quality over quantity. Bergman, in terms of future Star Wars series, said, “they have to be great, and when we’re in the position where we think we have what we want, we’re going to move forward.”
The Mandalorian & Grogu is also on its way to theaters in 2026. Bergman noted there are other films in the works but that they aren’t ready to make any announcements on them currently.
The main thing to note about this is that Disney is approaching the Star Wars universe as the business it is. A good story that can’t be made for a good price is not a good business decision. Unfortunately, that is what sealed the fate of The Acolyte.
For fans of the characters of The Acolyte who are disappointed about it not being renewed for a second season. There are always possibilities. If the right story for the right price is pitched, there is always a possibility for a film, books, comic books, or something else that could continue the story that was started in the first season of the series.
What do you think about the reasoning for the cancellation of The Acolyte? Would you like to see more stories come out of this first season in the future? If so, what would you like to see? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
