‘Princess Diaries 3’ Continues to Move Forward and Finds Its Director

Princess Diaries 3 is becoming more and more of a reality. Deadline is reporting that the film has found its director and Adele Lim will be the one taking the helm. Lim returns to Disney after writing the animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon.

This is the second time that Lim has directed a movie. The first was for Lionsgate where she directed the R-rated female Asian American comedy Joy Ride. Lim released a statement saying, “As a diehard fan of the original The Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.  We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Princess Diaries 3 is being produced by Debra Martin Chase. Lim’s producing partner Naia Cucukov is executive producing along with Melissa Stack.

The original The Princess Diaries was released in 2001. It starred Anne Hathaway who portrayed an awkward high school student who discovered she was royalty. This set her on the uneasy path of navigating being a teen while also figuring out how to be a Princess of Genovia. The film also starred Disney Legend, Julie Andrews. Both returned in 2004 for the sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The first two movies in the series were directed by the late Garry Marshall.

An exact timeline for Princess Diaries 3 has not been released at this point. Confirmation of casting hasn’t been made yet either. Both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews have said they would be open to returning to their respective roles. Hathaway, in particular, has shown eagerness.
