Wicked

New Release Date Set For ‘Wicked’

A new release date has been set for the upcoming Wicked movie musical. With this change of release date, the musical will not be released on the same day as Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2. Wicked’s new release date is on November 22. This is five days ahead of when it was initially set to arrive in theaters.

The original release date for Wicked was on November 27, the same release date as Moana 2. By moving the release date, Universal will avoid having a showdown between its musical and the animated sequel. The new release date will give the film a few days to build steam ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend. There will still be competition, however. The movie will now debut on the same day as Gladiator II.

This is not the first time that Wicked has seen a change in release date. Originally, the film was scheduled to be released on December 25, 2024. However, at that release date it would have been up against Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Universal undoubtably hopes that the new release will see it fair better against its new competition.

Wicked is a prequel to the events of The Wizard of Oz. The book was initially written by Gregory Maguire and published in 1995. It was then made into a very successful broadway musical. Its next destination is the silver screen where it will be a two-part movie. The second half of the movie will be released on November 26, 2025. The movie musical will include songs like Defying Gravity, Popular, and others. It stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda. They are joined by Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University headmaster Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq and Bowen Yang as Pfannee. The story of Wicked is the story of an unlikely friendship that ends up being torn apart by external forces.
