On this day in 1989, the Typhoon Lagoon water park opened at the Walt Disney World Resort. In the park’s legend, a furious storm jumbled ships and gear across an idyllic paradise. Miss Tilly is the park’s icon–a shrimp boat that was impaled on Mount Mayday. Every half hour, a 50-foot geyser erupts from her smokestack. Typhoon Lagoon boasts the world’s largest outdoor wave pool. Early morning surfing sessions feature six-foot waves every 90 seconds. [35 years ago in 2024]
