Vision Series Heading to Disney+ With Star Trek Producer at Helm

A new series that focuses on Vision is heading to Disney+. Variety is reporting that the series will see the return of Paul Bettany to the role. The series has also found a showrunner in former Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas.

Terry Matalas recently ran the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard. This season was widely celebrated by fans as it brought back the crew of the USS Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation to face off against a foe that threatened the very existence of the Federation itself. Since the season ended, there have been many calls from fans for more from Matalas and the new crew of the Enterprise for a spinoff. However, this apparently won’t be happening anytime soon. The strength of the season and its finale reportedly impressed Marvel executives. Kevin Feige, a Star Trek fan himself, appeared on the Star Trek podcast Inglorious Treksperts with Matalas. Now Matalas is working with Feige on Vision’s future.

Originally, another effort was made for a Vision series by WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer. However, Schaeffer eventually pivoted to work on Agatha All Along instead. Starring Kathryn Hahn, Agatha All Along is set to debut on Disney+ in September.

This new series with Matalas at the helm marks the first live-action series that has been picked up by Marvel in nearly two years. He will oversee the series and work through its development ahead of its eventual arrival on Disney+. This is a shift in strategy for Marvel toward a more traditional television production model. Traditionally, Marvel took a more feature film approach with directors and creative executives leading the way. With Matalas’ track record with Star Trek: Picard and before that 12 Monkeys, both Marvel execs and fans have reasons to be excited about this new series.

Vision first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He was created by the combined efforts of Tony Stark (Iron Man), Bruce Banner (Hulk), and the artificial intelligence program J.A.R.V.I.S., using the Mind Stone. He has incredible strength, speed, and durability. He can manipulate his density, allowing him to pass through things (or things pass through him) or become nearly invincible. He can also project energy blasts thanks to the Mind Stone. On top of that, he can also fly and has A.I., giving him superior computational and strategic abilities.

He has appeared in multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe films and series. They include:

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  • WandaVision (2021)

Vision’s journey in the MCU is marked by his quest to understand humanity and his own identity. Despite being a synthetic being, he grapples with profound philosophical and moral questions, often serving as a voice of reason and compassion among the Avengers. His relationship with Wanda adds emotional depth to his character, highlighting themes of love, loss, and the essence of human experience.
