Jerry Bruckheimer has been behind many big franchise hits in Hollywood. For Disney, the one he is perhaps most known for is Pirates of the Caribbean. In March, Bruckheimer shared that the next Pirates film will be a reboot that has been talked about. This movie is being written by Jeff Nathanson, who also wrote 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Nathanson has been hard at work on the script and Bruckheimer provided and update on its progress saying, “He’s cracked it.” He continued on saying, “He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’LLC get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”
Bruckheimer again confirmed that the next Pirates film will be a reboot. This will mean new characters coming to the franchise and most likely no Johnny Depp. After legal issues and a trial against Amber Heard, he has remained fairly off the grid in Hollywood. Disney reportedly has not wanted to work with him, either. Bruckheimer, on the other hand, would love to have him back.
“It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it,” Bruckheimer said. “I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page, that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”
This reboot is one of two Pirates of the Caribbean movies that are in the works at Disney. The other would star Margo Robbie. Bruckheimer confirmed that “We hope to get ‘em both made, and I think Disney agrees that they really wan to make the Margot one, too.”
There is more than just a passion for pirates in Disney’s reasoning for making more of these movies. Each of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies earned more than $650 million worldwide. Both 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest and 2011’s On Stranger Tides brought in over $1 billion each. This is a franchise that continues to be able to bring in the box office receipts.
