Tickets Now Available for ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ 25th Anniversary Screenings at El Capitan Theatre

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is returning to theaters 25 years after it first appeared on the big screen. To celebrate this milestone, the El Capitan Theatre is hosting screenings multiple times per nice from May 3, 2024 – May 7, 2024. Tickets for the screenings are $16 and can be purchased on the El Capitan Theatre website.

About the El Capitan Theatre
The El Capitan Theatre opened in Hollywood in 1926. Originally the venue was a playhouse and was one of the premier dramatic stages in the area throughout the 1920s and most of the 1930s. During this time, the El Capitan Theatre hosted over 120 plays. The first film it hosted was in 1941 for the world premiere of Citizen Kane.

The next year the theatre was converted to be used for first-run movies. This involved major remodeling that led to the use of drapes that hid most of the 1936 decor. It also received a new name and was known as the Paramount. It would continue as a first-run movie theatre for nearly 50 years before it closed in 1988. A year later, new owners Walt Disney Studios and Pacific Theatres began a two-year rehabilitation of the building. This is when it returned to its original name as well.

In 1991, the theater reopened and since then has been a showcase for Disney films. Quite often screenings are preceded by performances of the theatre’s Wurlitzer organ, which was brought over from the now-demolished San Francisco Fox Theatre. There are sometimes stage show productions before movies as well. The El Capitan is a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and also a contributor to the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment National Register Historic District. The Conservancy has an easement protecting the theatre’s facade and has worked with Disney to utilize modern features while retaining the historic exterior of the ship. This can be seen most easily with the marquee on the theatre. It is a must-visit for movie or Disney fans.
