Martin Garcia, the chairman of the board for the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, is leaving the former Reedy Creek Improvement District. His departure comes shortly after the district administrator left his role to take on the responsibility of being the interim elections supervisor in Orange County. This new role came at half of his $400,000 salary.
Martin Garcia did not release a statement on his departure. However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ press secretary Bryan Griffin thanked Garcia for “successfully navigating” the transition from the Reedy Creek Improvement District to its new iteration, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. Garcia “developed a new district focused on transparency and the elimination of corporate welfare,” Griffin said.
Along with Garcia’s departure, Governor DeSantis also recommended former senior advisor, Stephanie Kopelousos, to take over the role of district administrator. Kopelousos was a director of legislative affairs for Governor DeSantis. She also worked in former Florida administrations as well.
“We are glad to see her step into this leadership role as the District embarks upon the next chapter in its efforts to ensure an even and transparent playing field for the businesses that operate in Central Florida,” Griffin said.
The transition from Reedy Creek Improvement District to Central Florida Tourism Oversight District has not been without controversy. Along with leading to lawsuits between Disney and Florida leaders, many experienced employees have also left the district. There are currently two main lawsuits working their way through the courts, one at the state level and the other at the federal level. The results of these cases could determine the future of the district.
