Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien mayb have just finished directing a movie based on one classic Disney attraction but if he had his way, he’d direct a movie of another. In an interview with Screen Rant, Simien shared what other Disney attraction he would like to make into a movie… and it might not be the first one most Disney fans would immediately go to. However, it is one that has a lot of attention.
During the interview, here is what Simien came up with for another Disney attraction he’d like to make into a movie. “Captain EO, let’s go. Listen, I know it is out of commission, okay? I know that’s not technically a ride, but I am ready. I need some singing and I need some dancing and I need some jerry curl juice in outer space immediately.”
While many Disney attractions have already been made into movies or been talked about for movies, Captain EO is generally not on anyone’s list for getting the movie treatment. This could be perhaps because it was made initially by director Francis Ford Coppola and was written by George Lucas, Rusty Lemorande, and Coppola. The attraction’s original run was at Disneyland from 1986 to 1997 and Epcot from 1986 to 1994. The attraction utilized 3D and was a sci-fi musical short that starred Michael Jackson. To say there were a lot of icons that were a part of this attraction would be an understatement. Perhaps that is why it hasn’t been talked about for the movie treatment.
While the thought of turning Captain EO into a movie may seem daunting, there also is some logic behind this idea. The story behind Captain EO definitely has potential for development. The characters also could go a bit further. An origin story for what happened before the events of Captain EO would definitely make a lot of sense as well. Technology has also progressed quite a bit since the 80s so there could be a lot of possibilities for storytelling and bringing the world and characters of Captain EO to life.
At this point, there are no known plans to make Captain EO into a movie. Currently most of Hollywood is shut down due to strikes. Haunted Mansion hasn’t had a strong start at the box office either, partially because of the stripe and partially because of other movies in the theaters right now. However, a good pitch and a good story could overcome other obstacles.
