There is a third Princess Diaries movie in the works at Disney. The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Aadrita Mukerji is working on a script for the third movie in the series. According to the report, this movie will be a continuation of the Anne Hathaway movies and not a reboot.
At this point, Anne Hathaway does not have a deal to star in this movie. However, she has previously stated that she is in favor of another movie in the franchise. If the movie makes it past the script change, this support will hopefully turn into Hathaway returning to the role of Mia Thermopolis.
Hathaway originated the role of Mia Thermopolis in 2001’s The Princess Diaries. This was her breakout role. In the film, she plays an American girl who learns that she is heir to the throne of a European kingdom. She must then learn what all of that entails from her estranged grandmother, the queen. Queen Clarisse Renaldi is portrayed by Disney Legend Julie Andrews. After the success of this movie, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was released in 2004. Both of these were directed by the late Garry Marshall.
Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two Princess Diaries movies is producing this new one as well. Melissa Stack, the screenwriter behind The Other Woman and also Disney+’s featured Godmothered is executive producing.
Aadrita Mukerji has worked on television series ahead of this project. This includes work on Supergirl, Scorpion, Reacher and Quantum Leap.
