Sitting Down with Disney Legend Andreas Deja at The Walt Disney Family Museum

On June 23, 2022, Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book: Making a Masterpiece opened at The Walt Disney Family Museum. This beautiful exhibit will be available at the museum until Sunday, January 8, 2023. It was guest-curated by Disney Legend Andreas Deja. The night before the exhibit opened, The Walt Disney Family Museum hosted a special panel on the exhibit followed by a reception. DAPS MAGIC was invited to attend this special evening. The panel was hosted by Andreas Dejas, afterwards, he graciously granted an interview.

During the course of the interview, Andreas Deja talked about The Jungle Book, the creative process behind Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book: Making a Masterpiece, working with the team at The Walt Disney Family Museum, what his favorite piece of art is in the exhibit, and also about the other project he has in the works, MUSHKA. Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book: Making a Masterpiece is currently being displayed at The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, California in the Diane Disney Miller Exhibition Hall. It features over 300 pieces of rare art including original animation drawings and cels that are on loan from animation enthusiast and collector Mike Glad, retired Disney Creative Director and animator David Pacheco, and even Andreas Deja’s own collection. The exhibit also includes maquettes, model sheets, pencil tests, story sketches, concept art, behind-the-scenes photos and documents, American and international movie posters, merchandise, interviews, archival film clips, and immersive experiences.

Andreas Deja is an animator whose work at Walt Disney Animation Studios included being the supervising animator on characters in multiple Disney animated films including Roger Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Jafar in Aladdin, Scar in The Lion King, Hercules in the movie of the same name, Mama Odie in The Princess and the Frog, Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, Tigger in Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse and others! He is the author of The Nine Old Men: Lessons, Techniques, and Inspiration from Disney’s Great Animators. He guest-curated Mickey Mouse: From Walt to the World at The Walt Disney Family Museum. He is now the guest-curator for Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book: Making a Masterpiece at the museum. He also is working on a short film entitled MUSHKA.
